Hey all I'm thinking about running an Oceanic Biocube 14 skimmer in my JBJ Nanocube. The skimmer itself gets ok reviews online. However, most of the "nicer" nanocubes im seeing online are running it. When I had my previous nanocube I never even considered running a skimmer with a tank that small.

I'd like to get some of your feedback/opinions. I don't really want to do weekly water changes as suggested (I did monthly wc's on my other nano) Im going to stock it softies, rbta, a clown and maybe a firefish goby or something like that.

What Im thinking I'll end up doing is wait till further down the road and see how the coral do. (sometimes its just fun to get equipment happy though haha)

Also while I'm here, I was looking at an ebay led fixture. it has 4-3 watt whites and 2-3 watt blues. Think that is enough for this size of tank?

Having owned 2 biocubes and 2 of the oceanic skimmers myself i would recommend opting in for a better skimmer. The oceanic skimmer is air driven and with a bigger air pump i had marginal success pulling up skimate. Im not familiar with the exact dimensions of the back chambers of the JBJ but i know the make some nano skimmers that will fit chamber 2 of the biocube (the tunze 9002 and the aquaticlife 115).

I do waterchanges on my biocube every 2 weeks (becuase i just use high quality salt and dont dose) but if you bioload is low and filtration is good monthly WCs are more than adequate.

Im not sure what LEDs your referring to but if you plan on sticking to softies you wouldnt need much light anyway... I am running 4 12" ecoxotic stunners on mine and the corals are doing well, but i also suplement by running the original lights on pure actinic.

Im not sure of the exact dimensions either but the 14 is the only one I've seen people using on this cube. I'll have to look into your other suggestions though. Thanks for your input on the lighting as well. I have thought about running some ecoxotic stunners too but I figured if this other light would suffice I wouldnt mind trying it out. Here is the link

I have one I just pulled out of a tank if you want to borrow it and see how you like it. I just need to clean it up. If you don't have an ATO system, it will stop producing bubbles every single day on you as your water level drops. You are welcome to borrow it and really see how it works before you spend money buying one.

Do you think it was even worth running it then?

ps my little brother brought over some ecoxotic leds, the tank looked really good with them while running the stock 50/50 bulbs. Im just not sure If I feel like throwing that much down for supplements. If I go LED's I want to run only LED's...so may decisions lol

Oh and I looked at the other skimmers and they hydor wont fit. I cant tell if the tunze will or not but Im pretty sure I'd have to run the tank without the hood for that one to fit.

I looked at the LED fixture, you may want to check the lumen output there. It says 800 lumens. That leads me to believe they're either running below the max output (which is good) or they're running at the max output which means older, lower quality LEDs. You could actually build one that would work better for about the same price. I just built one for a 10 gallon using 4 white and 4 blue Cree leds on a switchable circuit and it cost less than what you'd pay for that one. It takes only about 2 hours to put together..
