Subject: Washing Filter Socks?
Date Posted: January 26 2013 at 6:37pm
My wife bought a new washer dryer set and I'm told I can't wash my filter socks in the new washer.

How do I go about this without her knowing, or does anyone have any other good suggestions?

Wash and hang them to dry where she showers....that should do it.

Or, tell her it must be a pretty crappy washer if it can't clean filter socks! Then promise to run an empty load with bleach afterward. :-)

SO they are made of reusable material? How often do you have to replace them?

I replace mine when they either get a hole or they are so thin you can pretty much see though them depends on how many you have how often they are washed that kinda thing, I get about 2-3 years out of them but I have like 15 rotating though them like 2 a week...

How are you washing  them that she minds it so much?
I wash mine seperately from clothes. I use hot water and bleach only - no soap. Extra rinse cycle. And I run the machine on the 'small' load setting, which is enough water level to wash 6 of the big socks or 12 small ones.
I use enough bleach that all you smell is bleach - no 'fishy' smell.

It's never been a problem before.  But now, with the new washer she doesn't want fishy stuff in there.  I usually wash them twice per week in lots of bleach.  Never a bad smell... unless you don't like bleach.

How does she expect you to wash them out now then?

I'd wash 1 in the kitchen sink. Make sure there are a few dirty dishes close by. I'd think she would prefer you use a machine designed to
wash things over a place where food and the family dishes get washed.

My wife had two laundries put in when we build the house 10 years ago and she never uses the downstairs one, so it's all mine.  Drop them by and I'll wash them with mine. Or the final suggestions is to hand her a bag full of filter socks, some bleach, a handful of quarters and a set of directions to the laundramat. But you'd need to be more brave than anyone I know.

I also do all the laundry for our family.  I work from home so I do laundry all day during work.  My wife is super understanding.  She knows i wash filters socks in the washer, no biggie.  Her big thing is she HATES it when I dump the skimmer in the toilet and don't flush it, or wash it out in the bathroom sink and don't wash out the sink well.  THAT pisses her off.

Simple solution , just pick out a washer better than what you just bought her . Show her a picture of it and tell her it is going in the garage and your going to paint a sign on it "Fish Stuff Only " !!!! I will be looking for your obituary soon . But if it works let me know for future reference . Dead

And that is good why it is good to be a female in the hobby.  I would never deny myself the rights to the washer and dryer for fishy stuff.

I say tell her you will need to buy your own then. Wink

It took almost one month exactly.  My wife asked today what I've been doing with the filter socks, now that I can't use our washer for them.

I told her I've been taking them up the street to Linn Griffith's house and he's been washing them.  Which is what I've been doing..... right everyone?  Right!
