I have two options for return pumps with this new tank I bought. One is a Jebao 1500 396gph but is a large pump and the other is a cobalt MJ-1200 295gph and is brand new. What would y'all go with.

You are probably OK with the MJ then

So you would go with the MJ despite the 100 gph less?? It is new and is smaller and prob more power efficient.

What head distance are you dealing with? Head will greatly effect those small pumps.

Now this is only a guess without actually measuring it but I'm going to say 6-8 inches.

Awesome thanks for the input. Yeah the MJ will pro be easier to work with since its half the size but only flows a lil less and it's new.
