Picked up a Hydor Koralia Smart Wave today and need to figure out what circulation pumps will work well with them, does anyone have any suggestions for my 55 gallon tank below? You seem to appreciate a bargain. My opinion is that Hydor Koralia are junk. They claim 800 gph but I don't believe it. Penny for penny, the best powerhead for the money is the Maxijet Pro. Also, the Maxijet actually pushes the amount of water they claim. For that 55, I would get the Maxijet 900 Pro, less than $20 each at Amazon. Two of them would do 2000 gph in that 55. I've studied and experimented with water flow extensively for over 20 years and find that it's not just the flow rate, it's also the placement and direction of flow that works. Placing two good stream powerheads, like the Maxijet Pro, down low on the sides or back corners with the streams pointing diagonally up to the center surface of the tank creates the best flow and turbulence for the best money. My 2 cents. Aloha, Mark  P.S. Wave action is overrated, though the set up described above does create wave action without any "wave controller" device. See the pic below. | Thanks for the info, I picked up two 1100gph's and placed at both ends of my tank. I have the wave maker alternating the pumps every two hours, and the tank now looks great, however.... When I came back over the weekend I had three dead fish, a yellow tang, a cheap purple one that used to slap my eel in the face with his tail, and another brown and white one that would act like a dog and eat tetras meant for my lion fish. My clownfish love the current, and all the corals seem to like it, except the xenias who seem to be a bit shriveled. Not sure if you had any ideas why they died? Maybe all the waste sitting at the bottom of the tank was kicked up all at once making the water bad, or they were wimpy fish who couldn't keep up, I don't know. |
