I would take it slow. 1 or 2 things every 5 -10 days (depending on water quality in the new tank). I upgraded from a 55 to a 150 and it took about 2 months to move everything over but I didn't loose any life. ------------- Jeff Rasmussen |

It really depends on what you currently have in the 55 gallon tank. The more stuff you have the more careful you need to be with the water quality. I moved my 65g to a 125g in one day. However I had the 55g sump up and running for the 125g for more than 6 weeks. (100lbs of live sand from 4 different tanks) I set up the 125 with a couple hundred pounds of ut sand and live sand from other tanks that were being torn down, 50/50. I also had 70lbs of utah rock it and let that run for 3 weeks till it seamed to stabilize.(running with the sump) Both were supplemented with live water from every water change that I did to the three tanks that I allready have.(approx 60g) On then big day I moved all of the live stock into laundry tubs complete with powerheads to maintain circulation. I moved the live rock into tubs as well and then moved all of the sand out of the tank and refuge. Then the aquascapeing went in and the live stock. The new lights were much more powerfull than the old tank so I took a week to aclumate the live stock to them. It took me over 9 hrs to complete the move. But 3 months to prepare for it. The new tank did go through a very small cycle after the move. After it was all done I lost no live stock and am very happy with how it turned out. I moved my 55 into my 125 in one day. Then ran the 125 w/out a sump for several days until I had converted the 55 into a sump.
I added about 70 gallons of new water, 50 lbs of new (cycled) LR and about 30 lbs of sand to the new tank. Then I began adding the rock and inhabitants from the 55. My advice: lots of rubbermaid totes and plenty of powerheads to keep the water moving. Also, invite a friend or two. Its a lot of work! |

I moved from a 55 to a 120....... I set everything up and let it run for 10 days or so with a bunch of Utah base rock. I then moved everything over in an afternoon. Everything has been great. ------------- Payson UT 55 Reef Est Aug 2003 120g Reef Est June 2005 |

If, like GShipley, the new tank is in a different place than the old tank, that's the best and easiest way to do it. Get the new tank up and going for at least 10 days while leaving the old one running as you carefully move LS and LR over. There is no reason why the filtration system should even lose a beat, if you do it right. If, on the other hand, the new tank is going in the same spot as the old, Dion and Shane H gave some good tips. Consider and make plans on how to keep things living and aerated in between tanks. Move LR in water not letting it touch the air if possible. When air enters the pores of LR it suffocates and kills the bacteria and small creatures living there. LR has to cycle again if it's got dead things in it. The temperature can drop to +65 without causing problems so don't worry about a heater, but definitely use powerheads or bubblers for aeration if the stuff is to be in tubs for more than a couple hours. Keep in mind that LR and LS are as important, if not more important than any coral or fish. They are the lifeblood of the reef tank. If you take good care of the LS and the LR you will have a successful move. | Thank you for all the info and i will try a little of everything and see how it works out i will try to get a digital cammara to take some picks of the 55g before and the 125 after but i will have to find someone to post them becouse i don.t know what i am doing in that department. |
