I have been out of the hobby for a while.  When I was last looking at protein skimmers the whole idea was small bubbles(larger contact area), and contact time.  There were three types of skimmers I knew of: counter current (with an air stone), downdraft, and venturi skimmers (where the air mixed in the pump).  At the time venturi skimmers did not work that great because they were co current, and didn't have much contact time.  But now it seams all skimmers are venturi skimmers that produce huge amounts of air bubbles, in a relatively small skimmer.  But I don't see exactly how they work.  I see what looks like some kind of wheel in there, but don't see how it all flows, and don't see how they could have much contact time.

Do they just figure with enough bobbles they don't need the contact time?  Do these new skimmers with more bubbles work better for gas exchange than an old style cc or downdraft?

Anyway, if anyone could get me up to speed with where we are at with protein skimmers I would appreciate it.  I may even make a diy one.  I have build a diy downdraft, and currently use a 4' diy cc skimmer.  But I always like to have a project going on.

Thanks
David

Now I'm not as familiar with those older types of skimmers, but here's how the common venturi/needle wheel skimmers work. They suck in air through the venturi and is sent through either a needle wheel or a mesh wheel - the purpose of these is to break up the bubbles into smaller bubbles - then shot into the skimmer body. Many skimmers have a bubble plate or something equivalent to slow the bubbles' ascent to the top, and the way the skimmer is designed with the neck helps too. That's the basics (not much to it), but the skimmers do vary on different things so do your research on the particular one you're getting.

So the water and air goes in the bottom.  The bubbles go up, and the water goes out the bottom.  The only contact time is just crossing the bottom of the skimmer?
