I have a newer 2.5 gallon nano filled with lfiji ive rock and a few scarlet crabs.  Any ideas as to what type of a fish would do well in such a small tank?

Clown Gobies and maybe a gramma or pseudochromis.  There maybe a few other small fish that you could put in you nano-reef, but I can't think of any at the moment.

There are not a lot of fish that will be happy in a 2.5 gallon.

neon goby?  fire-fish?

If it were my 2.5 gallon I wouldn't put a fish in it...  I'd get a cool looking mantis shrimp for it.

How new is "newer"  I would make sure your tank is well established and ready for fish and then find the smallest, hardiest, tank raised (if possible) fish you can.  And I hope you have experience with smaller tanks.

I agree with both above.  I don't think I would put anything in it, but a yellow tail damsel would be cool.  I've seen them in goldfish bowls.  But a mantis would be much more cool, and there is someone here who is probably happy to get rid of his.

Thanks for the opinions.  I am new to the marine hobby, but well versed in the freshwater (cichlid) side.  This may be no special feat, but I breed & raise convict cichlids in a 10 gallon tank with a pair of electric yellows in the same tank.  I'm accustomed to the frequent water changes and the maintenance of a small tank.

The 2.5G nano tank is 3.5 weeks old.  I was eying a scooter blenny, but I purchased a yellow tail damsel last night instead.  The scooters just seem like they need more room.  I think the real reason was the fact that the yellow tails are inexpensive and this is my first shot with salt water fish.   The damsel seems very comfortable in the small environment and was eating well this morning.  Thanks again for the input.

Neon Dottyback is a nicely colored and peaceful fish.  We have had a couple and I really like them.

Meterman,

I would say that without a doubt you will do well in the marine hobby. Don't be scared! . However, with the tank size you are pretty limited in fish. I would definately stay away from any of the blennies or other substrate feeding gobies & such. You will not have the nutrient requirements established in your substrate yet with the new tank. Also, the limited size of the surface area may not sustain an adequate food supply for them.

Take a look on the web and try to find similar size tanks that may give you ideas on how to aquascpe and stock your system. Here is one example http://www.geocities.com/tkadixon/mininanoreef.html. Most of the systems at 2.5 gallon that I have seen are coral and invertebrate systems.

Just my thoughts.

A scooter blenny is a No-No. It usually needs lots of live food and will die soon without.

Look at this 1.5 gal setup! That's a 1" Allens Damsel next to a dead Mangrove.

Full views show Mangroves, five types of macroalgae and it's own phytoplankton feeding three hidden clams.

I have done a 3 and 5 gallon. I tried a royal gramma in the gallon but it did not survive. I felt bad about so then I stuck with a pistol shrimp. A few hermits snails and coral. All those things did well and I still enjoyed the tank. Fish put off allot of wast for such a small system. I considered putting a 5 gallon sump on the 5 gallon but it just seemed like it would defeat the purpose. However if you are going to put a fish in your 2.5 I would consider it. Maybe use a bucket or something for a sumo with a dsp and refugium.

Well... I failed!  The yellow tail died last night.  Without going into too much detail, there are a # of reasons why this might have happened.  I think I will try to find a nice invert for the 2.5G tank instead of fish.

Why do you say that you failed? Marine fish can die in the first week, even hardy ones, and not necessarily because of something we did wrong.

It can be temporarily discouraging, but don't give up on getting a fish if you want one. FYI, A shrimp can be more sensitive than a fish. Feel free to discuss it here or to call me. I'd be happy to discuss the pro's and con's of keeping reef aquariums. I have no doubt that you can get this nano looking great.

This is what the WMAS is all about.

I have a 10 gallon nano on my desk that I really enjoy.

It is loaded with Corals, and I have a few fish in it (All damsels).  The tank has the Via Aqua multi skimmer on it for filtration and then I have about 15 pounds of live rock.

I have it stocked iwth two nice mushroom rocks, a few nice pices of silver tip xenia a frog spawn varias bottun polyps, and a metalic green galaxia.

The corals are all doing great, I tried to house a two seperate lion fishes, but neither did very well, so I have moved to the smaller fish.

Keep your water quality high, and waste under control (Don't over feed, or over stress the fish) and you will be fine.  Putting a single small fish in your 2.5 should be fine.  But make sure before you do it that you test your water and you no Amonia, or nitrite.  This goes with out saying but Amonia I would dare say is the single greatest silent killer of fish.

Good luck with your tank, and have fun with it.

I forgot to mention that my 10 has 72 watts of light on I have two 36 watt PCs.  1 is straight Acetintic the other is a smart bulb half white half blue.
