Note;

We have had countless reefers test their refracts using a std. Many but not all are right on using the std and need no re-calibration.

Best sentence in there
Now that such standards are both commercially available and can be DIY projects, many aquarists have come to find that their refractometers are not as accurate as they had assumed.

I don't like exposing my fish to stds either. Yuck! I think when a fish gets AIDS its called FAIDS.

Yup Adam, we have been trying to tell people that but they just won't listen, more of that assuming, just because it is a refract. Based on posts and tests it looks like around maybe 1/3 of them are off, reading to low usually. But the same thing applies to swing arms.

error in article

A new standard for hyposalinity can also be made by mixing two parts 35 ppt seawater and one part freshwater

Nope, should be one part 35 ppt and 2 parts FW

(1.026 +1.0 + 1.0) / 3 = 1.009 or 12 ppt (hypo)

(1.026 + 1.026 + 1.0 0 / 3 = 1.017 or 23 ppt
