Topic: Shrimp Goby & Shrimp (Help Me Choose) Posted: October 06 2006 at 11:54pm |
So after hearing Scott Michael talk about the interesting relationship between a Shrimp Goby and a Shrimp, I think I've decided I want to go that route. Looking at books, there's quite a few Shrimp Gobies and I'm curious, which people recommend? Also, the only Pistol Shrimp I've seen for sale was at "The Aquarium" and was an expensive $26.99, which is more than I'd like to spend. Does anyone either have a Pistol Shrimp or know where to find them for a relatively inexpensive price? Lastly, can other shrimp pair up with gobies? Thanks!

Someone at work told me...Fish 4 U. I unfortunately couldn't make it out there today, but I'll try tomorrow. It'll be a week or two before I add the combo anyways... Can anyone chime in with their experiences with this combo? Would you personally recommend it? Lastly, can a Skunk Cleaner and Pistol shrimp co-exist?

Wanted to bump to try to get this answered as I've heard conflicting info:
Can a Skunk Cleaner and Pistol shrimp co-exist?
Do WMAS members get a discount at Fish 4 U?
Will a small Percula be ok in a tank with a Pistol?
Fish 4 U had (2) Tiger Shrimp for $17.99 a piece and also (2) High-Fin or also know as Yellow Rose Shrimp Gobies for $14.99 that looked great. As soon as the (2) week mark is up (from when I added my percula) I'll be stopping by.

Yes they will co-exist.
Yes they get a discount but it is a Fish4U credit next time you purchase.
Yes a percula will be ok with a pistol shrimp.
We had a pair of percs with a pair of Yellow rose SG and a Pistol shrimp in a 24 gallon nano and everyone got a long fine.
That's a good price on the pistol shrimp too.

A few questions regarding Pistol Shrimp:
#1: How long would you recommend acclimating a Pistol Shrimp? I plan on doing so via drip method.
#2: For obvious reasons, I'd like the shrimp (and future shrimp goby) to have their cave or burrow near the front of the tank in full-view. Will pre-making a cave/burrow and HOPE that the shrimp finds it do any good?
#3: At Fish 4 U there are (2) Pistol Shrimp. How should I determine which to pick? The bigger of the two...or?
Thanks, I can't wait to pick him up.

1. I would use drip method.
2. I would try it but it didn't work for us long term
3. I would pick the larger.

One more question...
How tolerant are Pistol Shrimp of Nitrates? My nitrates have been fluctuating a bit from 20-40PPM, yah, high and I'm not sure why.
I've been doing 15% water changes weekly and also I'm slowly removing my bioballs, which as many say are a nitrate factory.

Get the nitrates down before you get him. They are not tolerant of high nitrates.

Mike, you confirmed what I've been reading in regards to nitrates. What exactly would constitute "High Nitrates"? Also, am I correct when I say that Shrimp have relatively little bio-load compared to fish? Adding both the Shrimp Goby and Pistol Shrimp at the same time would be ok?

You want your nitrates to be 0, I would wait to add them until they were gone.

I like zero nitrates. I just checked the back of the WMAS Business card and it says <15ppm (less than 15)
20 is high to me and 10 would have me concerned.

Thanks for the advice Mike.
I'm in the process of removing the bio-balls, there are maybe 25 or so balls left and from my reading that is where the majority of the nitrates are coming.
Do you know...would adding coral (I've added the GSP, Frag of Devils
Hand, Frag of Purple Leather, Shrooms, Zoos, Palys, and Kenya Tree,
within the one to two weeks) increase nitrates? Geez...that's a lot.
I plan on adding some more sand (I have anywhere from 2"-3" of bed right now) and turning the back of my sump into a refugium and hopefully I can scrounge up some macroalgae from some people here. Anyone...anyone care to donate some sand and macroalgae? : )

I have some macro, you can come get a handful and check out my tank to see if there is anything you'd want to trade.
