So I went to the aquarium the other day and bought some water, food and a couple of dry shells for my hermit crabs. I noticed one of the shells looked like it had a smaller shell in it. I didn't think much of it and dropped them in my tank. Later I noticed one of the shells was moving and there was in fact a snail in it! My wife thinks one of our snails took the shell. I think the snail stayed alive and is now going about its business like nothing happened. What do you think people? Is it possible?

If there is a snail in that shell it was always there.  Snails grow their shells they are not like hermits that pick up empty shells to use.  The smaller shell inside the larger shell is the door that the snails can pull shut for protection.  It has a name, but I can't pull it out of my brain just at the moment.

Crazy. How long do they survive out of water?

Operculum is the word Will is looking for.
A couple years ago, I brought some LR back home from Hawaii. It sat moist but mostly dry in a plastic container for 3 months before being placed back in saltwater. A month later I noticed some small snails that could not have come from any other source. Thumbs Up
