I was wondering if it is possible to propagate starfish.  I seem to recall seeing a starfish propagated on television by cutting off one of its legs and then it grew into a new starfish (and the old one grew back its old leg).  Would this be possible in an aquarium?  Would it release toxins into the water? It seems almost too easy...

I just did some research...and it seems that only some starfish are able to reproduce this way.  I wonder if mine are able to. I have a sand-sifter and a linckia.

Many starfish will propagate this way, but I would not recommend it with either the linkia or sand-sifter.  Once they lose a limb the usually perish in aquaria.

Thats a good questions and I've been wondering the same. I have two Harlequin shrimp and over the past three months they have completely wiped out my Asteria infestation and I'm going to need to start feeding them more starfish. This would be a cool way to help cushion the cost if it is possible.

Did you find out what kinds of starfish do this?

For your Harlequin I would use chocolate chips.  I have never had good luck "propagating" them, but I used to keep about a dozen starfish (which you can usually pickup cheap if you have a pet store order them for you) in my sump and when I needed to feed my shrimp I would just cut a leg off one of them.  By the time I rotated through the starfish they first one had grown back its leg and I could start over.  In a sense it was a perpetual food source.

Thanks for all the input!  Does anyone know of anyone who has tried to propagate starfish, or any websites?  I just can't give up on the idea.  I might even just gamble and try it myself, but I'd like to at least find somebody who has tried.

Thanks Jake, I'll look into ordering some soon. I love my little babies. I have one that I aquired off the forum that is HUGE and he even comes out during the day. If you have a starfish problem they are the best thing for it, but I digress. This was a thread for propagating not decimation Wink.
