Topic: Sundance "Chasing Coral" Posted: January 30 2017 at 12:18pm |
Did anyone get a chance to see the documentary "Chasing Coral"?
"Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. A team of divers, photographers and scientists set out on a thrilling ocean adventure to discover why and to reveal the underwater mystery to the world."
Breathtaking, informative, and emotional, it's an absolute must watch for every member of wmas.
Netflix acquired the film, so you will be able to watching it there soon.

I heard a few members mention it and talk about it but I'm not sure who got to actually see it. Jon put the club in for a screening drawing that they had. Everyone cross their fingers for that.

It was a really hard ticket to get at Sundance. Once I heard about Netflix I decided to wait (free is great). I did get a chance to talk to one of the photographers on a bus. They filmed in a lot of places and used some really interesting equipment. Especially time lapse views. The photographer mentioned all that they interviewed a lot of scientists, including Ken N at CRF (he has spoken to the club before). I am curious to see those interviews. He also mentioned they are doing this big outreach tour and going from city to city doing screenings. I did submit our group to get a private screening of the video. I do plan to follow-up in a few weeks to see if they would be interested in coming out later this year. A lot of the film crew was based out of Colorado so they are close. If we could even stream it as a group (with their permission) once it is out on Netflix I think that would be pretty awesome as well. Thanks for posting. What else did you see at Sundance?

The "star" of the movie is a really passionate young guy named Zack who lives in Colorado. They have several scenes where is he is at a LFS in Colorado pointing out the different kinds of coral. I think he MAY be the easiest to contact to try and get help to get a screening.
At Sundance I saw Lemon, Wilson, Chasing Coral, and Wind River.

This is the guy I was talking about. If someone representing the club reaches out I'd bet he could help.

I will reach out to Zack in a bit. I want to see how the normal process goes. Plus I think they will be really busy. Would be great to have them out to talk about how they made the film too. I am definitely going to keep looking into this. We saw Before I Fall, Polka King, Last Men in Aleppo, Wind River and The Last Word. We got late picks from our timeslot so we had to make the best of what was out there. Most we went in with low expectations and they all exceeded them so that was good! We really wanted to see Chasing Coral and Wilson.

I think after you see the film you'll understand why I think Zack would be really easy to reach out to about this. Seems like the kind of guy who would like to help a community like ours however he could.
Which were your favorites that you saw?
I enjoyed Wind River, had some major character flaws imo, but entertaining movie. The Mexican standoff scene was riveting. Wilson was hilarious if you like dark/obscene comedies.

I enjoyed Wind River although I thought the ending wrapped up too easily. If you have seen the other movies he has written (Sicario and Hell or High Water) they have a lot of suspenseful moments. Before I fall was better then I thought (especially thinking it was going to be a teeny mean girls meets ground hog day). The Last Word was a nice feel good movie, good acting. Polka King was a lot of fun. Great, crazy real story and Jack Black was EXCELLENT and I don't usually say that about him in a lead role. Aleppo was eye opening but could have been edited better.

On my screen request I mentioned we were a non profit group and advocate for advances in reefkeeping as well as protecting corals and fish. I did tell one of the filmmakers they should also reach out to Macna to do a screening there. That would be an amazing banquet discussion at MACNA.
