This is my Aunt & Uncle's Seahorse Tank. The seahorses along with the tank are doing very well!

There is only one species in the tank, a pair that they bought at MSM and we are unsure what species they are. We can't tell whether they are male/female or one of each. The top picture is under a MH and the bottom is under pc actinics.

They are not eating frozen food yet. They are feeding them ghost shrimp and the tank is full of copepods.

The top pic is a female.....
The pic on the bottom is 2 females, I think. If you can get a pic of their
bellies, we can tell for sure. I guess there will be no fry......
I'm going with h. barbouri......
Connie, OR is soooo slow! The waiting list is humongous!

Next time I see them I will get a better picture of the second one. Did you order from OR? What is wrong with the ghost shrimp business?

Yes I did make an order for 4 with Ocean Rider. Suzy & I are going to share. They are about 60.00 more per horse then you pay at the LFS because they are CB ( captive bred ) and not WC ( wild caught ) there are a few differences which make paying much more upfront worth it in the long run. They are eating frozen food so there is no need for the bi-weekly trip to the LFS for shrimp and they are healthier then WC. You save the upfront money in less then a year by not dealing with that ghost shrimp business,,, I really think it is just a matter of choice. If I bred shrimp, Id save the cash...

This is Cody's uncle checking in. Thanks Cody for posting these great pics.
I've tried setting up a tank for ghost shrimp. One batch I put in lasted several days, but no offspring, I ended up feeding them all to the horses. The next batch all died within a couple of days. So, we're a long way from breding them, but I want to keep working on that because as you say the twice weekly trips to the LFS get old pretty fast. I'm trying to interest them in some frozen food too, and occasionally it looks like they are taking some in. I just get nervous and want to make sure they are well fed, so I keep putting in the ghost shrimp too.
I think we have two females. We'd love to try for fry, so we may look at adding two males in a bit. 46 gallon tank just for the seahorses so I think we'll be ok adding a couple more.
Thanks. Eric.

PS: Here's a trick my equines have taught me.
First, get them accustomed to eating from a certain place. A bowl is
hard, 'cause the shrimp just jump out of it, but a larger sided bowl
works. I got mine to reach into a small fish net for food. As soon as they
see the net, they swim over for dinner. After they start doing that, you
can start putting in the same shrimp they know as food, but you start
maiming it. I squished it in the net (YUCK). When they started eating
limping food, I totally squished it, sometimes even breaking them into 2
pieces. Now, I bring home a lot of ghost shrimps and feed them 'till they
won't eat no more. Then, i rinse 'em and put in a baggie a put them in the
freezer. I keep thinking they will make the leap to frozen mysis now, but I
guess they look so different, the horses know they aren't ghosts!
Sometimes, my 2 females will snick at frozen mysis, but not always.....
At least now, I can go to the LFS every other week and fill the freezer
instead of trying to keep 'em alive. I do have a breeding "tray" for the
ghost shrimp, that works good, but they grow so slowly that I don't think
it would really help you.. I just do it now so i can get tiny ones for my
babies!

Eric, Great set up. You horses look very healthy. I am putting 4 in a 45 so i think you would be fine adding more. If you have WC I would not get CB as they may carry bugs and other nasties that your WC are immune to but the CB would not be and they may get very ill and even die. Suzy gave me the name of a great site for horses. Its seahorses.org. They have ton of info and great tips on how to get yours eating frozen..... Good luck....

I don't know for sure which breed they are. The LFS just didn't know. Would it help if I asked Cody to post more pictures, or does an expert want to come by for a look? I live in the Cottonwood area.
Thanks for the tip on feeding, we'll start giving that a try.

I prefer to think of it as a stud service!
I posted your pic on SH.org. We'll see what they say....
If you check out their site, take what they say with a grain of
salt.....(preferably IO)...most of them are newbies, and the ones that are
not, are just a little off...
Right now, there's a thread showing how to make fake gorgonians outta
pipe cleaners....

Are you thinking about getting a male? We can't stud for you, 'cause my
males are Kuda, and that's the only thing I think yours aren't!
Connie and I are getting some H. erectus, .....I'm sure they won't be
ready for eggs for a while, though....
The hard part about wild caught is you don't know how old they are. If
you get a young male and then wait 'till he's ready to carry eggs, it might
be too late. But, then you'll have an in with the people who have
females!!!!

Thanks for all the help. From the thread on seahorses.org it looks like h.erectus is the best educated guess.
We would like to get two males and see if nature takes its course. I'll let you know when we get additions to the tank. Any and all help appreciated.
