Topic: Fish Spear Gun? Posted: January 05 2006 at 9:02am |
I need to remove a big Damsel that is causing trouble. It is very smart and has eluded all other attempts. I don't want to remove the rockwork and do not care if it has to die to be removed.
My thought is to spear it. I wonder about using a long thin metal shaft inside of a glass tube. The hollow glass tube needs to be 18-24" and the thin metal shaft 20-30". The end of the metal shaft would be modified with hooking barbs.
What d'y'all think of this idea and where could I acquire these items?

Believe it or not I've seen a problem fish killed in a tank in a similar manner with a bb gun .

it will take a fairly large amount of force to spear a fish i think, enough that if you miss i would be worried about it damaging the glass/acrylic in the tank.
a 24 inch glass tube could be tough to come up with and would be fairly fragile. you could find a 12 or 16 inch plastic tube used for pipetting though easily, i'm sure suzy has access to a few different kinds.
the shaft you can get thin metel down at home depot, or welding rods will work as well. lots of options there and a little soldering or the barbs.
sounds like a jacque cousteau experience in the making!

Mark, is the problem fish the only fish in the tank..if so how about rigging up a small transformer to stun the jerk fish..think of fishing with an old telephone ringer. :)

I'm thinking a length of 1/8" ID rigid plastic airline tubing. Cut the straight (horizonal lower) section of a wire coat hanger. File a barb on the end of this wire. Attach a larger rubber band at one end of the plastic tube, slide the spear into the tube and rubber band. Pull back, aim and fire.

Jon - you have weapon making skills.
I'm very interested to see if Suzy will contribute to such activity.

When I was a kid we found that some of our fireworks would still go off in a local canal. Maybe you'd like me to come over with some bottle rockets!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Stun the fish with an underwater explosion" Wait until He floats to the surface.
Sorry Mark, I couldn't resist the humor of the whole weapon and how do I kill a fish topic! I wonder is there already a "101 ways to kill a fish book out"?

Fishing hasn't worked?
I would be concerned about breaking the tank with a speargun and fireworks.
I have to take this opportunity!
We need more info on your tank. Please fill out this form:
What size tank?
What other fish?
How much live rock?
Do you care if the tank shatters and dumps water all over your floor?
Just kidding Mark!

Put a grizzly bear on the edge of your tank and have him paw it out of there like a spawning salmon ...
... of course then you have the problem of getting the grizzly out of your living room!

Geez! A spear? A BB gun?
What about a little Ambien to gently relax him to sleep, then he can be gently removed to a kinder, gentler tank?
(Like my lionfishes house? Even I think damsels are the spawn of Satan!)

Have you thought about fishing for it with a line and hook?
Fly fishing hooks can get pretty small and damsels are aggresive eaters. with the right bait it might work.
you could also try snagging him with a treble hook on a line.

I have used a wet and dry shop vacum to suck up fish before.
It will even keep them alive. (most of the time)
Use a clear tube hooked up to the shop vac with a thumb sized hole at the top.
Turn the vac on and the air comes in via the thumb hole.
Put it close as possible to the fish and put the thumb over the thumb hole.
Fish get's sucked into the tank.
Now turn off the vac and pull the fish out of the tank.
If you want to keep the fish alive, clean out the shop vac and put 2-3" of saltwater into the bottom.
Disclamer: the fish doesn't ALWAYS survive the ride.

You guys are way funny. You have my wife and I in tears . I am quickly learning with some fish that once they go in, you tear the tank apart to get them out huh! Good luck Mark. If you need two more hands in your tank just call me. Can't promise I won't come out without some corals though

As I recall Susan used a wet/dry vac to capture her last problem clown goby.
