Topic: Ughhhh Posted: August 17 2007 at 11:58am |
Ok, so I just bought me a Prizm skimmer from Fish-4-U and they told me that it could take a couple of days for it to get up to par and skimming all the goo. Well I am getting the green/brown sludge in the cup but I cant control the microbubbles. This is an HOB unit and I have the flow valve turned to the most restrictive position and still getting tons of bubbles going into the tank. Not only does this compromise the corals but it makes the entire tank less appealing to the eye. Any suggestions on how to get rid of these stupid bubbles?

Is there anywhere you can run the output through some filter floss?

Not quite cotton. I've never tried cotton before in a tank. However, they do have filter floss available at most lfs.

Polyester is best because you can bleach it when needed. It can
also be had at most fabric stores for much cheaper, just run it through
the washing machine with 1/2 cup bleach before using it in the tank.

Found this...
Use mechanical media sheeting (the stuff that comes in sheets, usually
blue or white and is coarser than foam and stronger than filter wool)
and cut it so as it will completely fill the overflow chamber. you
might need to add extra pieces to completely fill be space. The idea is
to make sure all water has to flow through this on it's way out of the
skimmer body. This mod will eliminate the micro bubbles and increase
the contact time within the skimmer.

I hate reading reviews on items I have bought. Money wasnt an issue, I just relied on advice from a LFS. I was torn between the Prizm and the Seaclone 150. I think I made the wrong choice...

The only thing that sucks about having filter media is that it will need replaced and you'll probably have to do it often (bi-weekly) It seems to me that it would build up fast too cause of where its at.

I don't think you'd need to replace it all that often. It depends on the size/stock of the tank, and the amout of "dirty" his skimmer pulls out. Then when it's really dirty, pull it out, and wash it. You may have 2-3 to cycle through so that when you're washing one, you have another.

I don't know if this is any kind of consolation or not, but I've heard horrible reviews about the SeaClone, and have heard that the Prizim is way better for the money.
