Here is a pic of a bottle of green water>

And here's the rotifers consuming it at a fast rate...

I thought this may be an interesting topic for those new members who didn't know what a rotifier is. The propagation is easy and the benifits are worth the trouble in feeding your tanks.  My setup consists of a 10 gallon rotifer tank and 4 liter bottles of green water. You can read some good posts on the board for growing phyto. I aerate both the bottles and the tank. ( Be careful you don't want to use the same bottles for your phyto and your Rots) Any cross contamination will destroy your phyto and I mean fast. Rotifers propagate at a really fast rate. I usaually mark my bottles with a marker (ROTIFERS) for identification. Believe me it will take just a few and there goes your green water. I have also found that rotifers like a higher salinity (1.26-1.30). They don't like the same light as I use to grow my phyto. They will do well off to the side in more subdued light. I usually dip a liter every other day and dump it in my tank. I then replace it with a fresh liter of dark high density phyto. They, in my opinion are great food for your reef. The costs are minimal and the benifits are worth the effort.

Thanks for the tips Bob, I had a good culture of rots going but had it crash for some reason. Maybe it was under to intense of light...seems I can grow anything in my tank, but can't grow something as simple as phyto and rots.

I am interested in talking about these in more detail when I come to see your set up.  Thanks for the heads up - this is just the sort of thing this new person to the hobby wants to know about.

I believe they are actually easy to keep, if you buy the stuff you need...I have been half heartedly trying to grow this stuff without setting it up right.

Do I understand you correctly .. you have 2 gallons of phyto growing and 10 gallons of rotifers?  Can you post a picture of your setup?

Maybe that's my problem.  I thought they liked lower salinity.

I think the big thing with rots is making sure they always have a bit of live
phyto but not too much? I know that sounds weird, 'cause if one stinkin'
rot gets in a culture of phyto, it multiplies way faster than the phyto does!
But, if the bottle of rots seems to have "crashed", it might just be that
they have gone dormant? I have left them for vacations and had them all
disapppear and been able to bring them back.

Bob, maybe these pods don't eat your type of phyto? or, maybe they
grow so fast the ammonia goes up? I always add a few drops of Prime to
my cultures, just in case. Want to try them one more time? I really want
you to be able to have a culture just in case mine goes south!

But, it's really going make you nuts if a rot gets in with a strong culture
of pods!

It's actually a very simple setup. Besides the flourecent tubes on top I place a grow light in the back laying on the table and I also use tinfoil for more reflection. You want as much light exposure as possible and your phyto will multiply rapidly. I will rotate each of the bottles every other day. It gets dumped into the rotifier tank and then to the display tank.  I think Susy and Adam use the basic setups also.

Suzy maybe your right about feeding your pods Prime and a different phyto. Have you tried nano and did you have any success?  But the strange thing is they never make it longer than one or two days. What salinity level do you keep them at? Also temprature..all my cultures are kept in the basement with no heat. I need to pick your brain at the next meeting. Isn't it a hoot...I can grow anything but a Suzy type pod.

I've been growing them on Tetraselmis and chaetocerous. I have never
tried them on Nanno because I haven't grown nanno for a few years...

I have mine in an unheated basement.

The saliniity starts as the same as the phyto, but I rarely check it and add
fresh h20. Maybe I'd better? it's probably like 50 ppm!

I guess I should get a starter of Tetraselmis and go from there. That may be the key.

I have some, if you want I can bring some to the meeting. I wonder if you
want to try the chaetocerous? It grows so flippin' fast!

I'll take you up on a chaeto starter Suzy. Do you want a rot or two or a million.

I'll bring some to the meeting! And, some more pods?

I don't want no stinkin' rotifers! i think they are the mother-of-all-evil-
cultures! If even a tiny cyst gets near a pod culture, it's gone!

Eekkkk! They are evil!! Try getting 'em out!

JK, I used to have them. I still would but the fry I'm foo-fooing with
prefer pods...If I was an anenomefish sorta girl, I'd like rots. They do grow
incredibly fast and almost effortlessly...
