Topic: Who is the best algae eater? Posted: March 20 2007 at 10:09pm |
I keep getting hair algae and I also have this other really wierd looking algae that I'm not sure what it is called. So I am looking for something to eat some of it up. I have toyed with the idea of getting a sea hare, but if there are other alternatives I would rather do that. I don't think I want a rabbit fish either, so what are my options? When I test phosphates they are at .5.

how much macro do you have in your fuge??? I started noticing that the tank will steal the nutriants in your fuge and feed your tank algae if you dont have any room for your macro to gro in your fuge. MAKE SENCE??? I am fighting this very thing. And as for your test not showing high phos is because youe algae is eating it up to fast. I have had a sea hare. i like my rabbitfish. cool looking. I'd say they both wouldnt hurt. if you dont have to much then dont gamble on the hare... if there is not enough to eat he will die and poison your tank. What is your ratio crabs/snail to tank size. you should have 2 per gallon.

A lawnmower blenny might work. Fun to watch as well.

I have 4 astrea snails, 1 or 2 turbos (they kick the bucket after 2 months max, in my tank), less than 10 stomatella, 50-75 of these really small snails (not sure what they are, but they look like miniature turbos). 5 or so hermit crabs, blue legged hermit, 2 scarlet hermits, and 1 emerald crab. That is my entire clean-up crew.

I love my lawnmower blenny even though he's lazy and doesn't eat much algae.

Lawnmower Blenny. They won't eat the long stringy stuff but if you can pull it or brush it down to a more manageable size they will help keep it in check. There are days I look at mine and wonder if his stomach will pop!

How long and stringy do you mean? I had several rocks covered with hair algae a couple inches long. He had it GONE within about a week!

My only concern is it nipping at my SPS and clam. Anyone have this problem?

Longspine sea urchins will do wonders for algae. I have a ton of snails, hermits that have done very little for the for the control of algae. I also have a lawnmower blenny, but he has not done much either. I have two of these urchins. If you want one, I'll give him to you. They have done a great job for my algae problem and are running out of food. Let me know if you want to try one.

I'm impressed! I would say that was rare but would like to know if others have had this same experience.

I have not had this problem with my Lawnmower blenny or Black Sailfin Blenny.

I would love it but if I remember correctly you are in orem? I'm up in clearfield and the furthest south I ever get is to North SLC. I would be willing to give you a frag of SPS for the urchin.

Man, maybe I need to try a long-spine urchin.
Dale, Jared lives by my place of work. Would you like me to get it for you? I need to get a frag from him anyway.

Lyscer,
I was able to catch one of the urchins last night and move him to a tank where he will be more accessible. Corey is coming over Friday to pick him up. If you can, have him bring a bucket with him to put the urchin in. He is too big to fit into a bag.

I had a urchin for a while in my reef. It ate a lot of coraline. He now lives in my sump if anyone wants him......

Thanks, |
We kept one in a 24g nano for a year and he was still fat and sassy when we upgraded tanks.
