Topic: would this keep my anemone in place? Posted: October 28 2010 at 10:14pm |
i bought a green bubble tip anemone and its in a corner of a tank where i cant really see it and doesnt come out very often and i was reading in the internet that by setting it near a pvc pipe it would help keeping it where i want it because it would find a place to set its foot inside the pipe, anyone has any experience with this or any sugestions?

It's worth a try, but honestly, it is almost impossible to keep an anemone where you want it. They can crawl over just about anything and through an amazingly small hole. They pretty much decide where they want to be and once they find the right place they usually settle down and don't move a whole lot more unless something changes in that spot like water flow, light availability, etc.

Yeah, it does work, problem is getting them out. I had an anemone that got chewed up by my powerhead, set it in my tank and it found my Jawfish Condo, now it is healing itself at an awesome rate, but wont move out of the pvc pipe and I want to pull the pipe out of my tank... haha
Edit:
Most likely it is still acclimating to your light, I know mine didnt stop moving around for a few months

You might search the LFS for a piece of LR with a nice hole in it that is a good size for your anemone. After it settles in, you can move the rock where you want it. As long as the anemone has what it needs, it shouldn't move after it settles in.

Anemones would not stay where you want to unless you are really careful, honestly i moved my anemones to a bigger tank and they havent move since i placed them where i left them honestly i would not care if they move, maybe thats why they dont move?

When you say it doesn't come out very often, do you mean it's behind the rocks or that it stays retracted, or both? I agree that anemones like to find a place where if bothered, they can retract and be protected. It's not always a hole. Sometimes it's the crack between two rocks. My anemone, which had been in the same place for a few months, recently went on a walkabout and found a place on one side of a rock that is protected on the other side by a thick growth of Kelp. Anemones like Utah Rock with it's nooks and crannies.
Healthy anemones like to find a place of broad flow. One of the things that can make them move is to change the flow by moving the powerheads or return nozzles. One of the tricks to making an anemone move is to point the powerhead flow right at it. Water conditions have a lot to do with how long anemones stay hydrated/open. Alk and Ca need to be within range. If the water has a lot of residual coral chemicals, the kind that coral give off to protect their territory, the anemone may stay retracted for days or weeks. If the chemicals are not removed from the water, the anemone may eventually fad away and die. Removing those aleopathic chemicals has a little to do with regular monthly 10% water changes, but has a lot more to do with running some AC(activated carbon) at least one week/month. Hope this helps.

Two Tomato Clownfish and an Urchin in a 50 gal with an anemone hiding says something. In another thread you said you might get MH lighting. What kind of lighting does this tank have now? How old are the bulbs/tubes? Can you post a pic?
