Topic: zebra vs snowflake eel? Posted: June 02 2012 at 11:44pm |
We are trying to decide which type of eel we want for our 180. We had originally planned on getting a snowflake, but after doing some research we are now thinking about a zebra eel. We've also been reading about eels escaping, eating small fish, and destroying rock work which makes us wonder if we want an eel at all. Does anyone have an opinion for one over the other? What are everyone's experiences with eels? Did anyone have an eel that ate everything in their tank? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bacot

We have a small (6") snowflake eel and we couldn't be happier with it. We did quite a bit of research before deciding that this species was the right one. The snowflake and zebra are both pebble-toothed morays that specialize in eating crustaceans and hard-shelled invertebrates (not fish). The snowflake and zebra might eat cleaner shrimp and will surely eat peppermint shrimp but should leave your fish alone. We went with the snowflake because it doesn't get quite as big and we really like the pattern. Here's an awesome link if you want to learn more...

I have a very reasonably priced Snowflake available (Free). I've had him about a year. He's been with the same 3 fish the entire time (2 damsels and a clown). He's been great, but I'm going to be completely redoing the tank and he doesn't fit into the plans. It's a small tank anyway, so he really should be relocated.
Let me know if you're interested.

We ended up going with a snowflake ourselves. The guy is quite interesting. Goes crazy and feeding time, but is so blind he nips at my fishes fins. They seem more confused by it then bothered. They just stay out of its way when it is swimming.

I LOVE MY SNOWFLAKE! I feed him shrimp out of my hands 3 - 4 times a week. He swims right up to the top of my tank, and i just hold it in, and yes, i know i should be careful about getting bit:P Anyways good choice!

Yea, one thing is whenever i go to feed my fish or him he smells it, and swims around and tries to get my other fish due to the fact that hes blind (like you said) but i am not too worried about my other fish, since every one except my tang has a good natural defense. I do realize that tangs have that "spike" by their tail though... anyways the biggest issue with me worring about it is it jumping out of the tank....:(
