Topic: Zoa's not opening? Posted: December 13 2008 at 11:03am |
Hi Y'all,
I stopped by BW on way home from Ogden on Thurs. and bought 2 little 1 headed Zoa's. 1 is on a very tiny rock and the other is on a empty snail shell. I put them both in when I got home and they both opened slightly, then my angel fish nipped at them and they haven't opened since. I tried putting them up on the rocks so they would be closer to the light but naughty fish, snails, emeral crabs and hermit crabs keep knocking them off. Do you think they are dead? How do I know if they are dead? How long should I wait for them to open?I now have them out of the tank in a little bowl, if they are still alive I probably need to glue them to the rocks, what kind of glue do I use and where do I get it?
Thanks, Gail

Gel superglue works great. Just try to keep the glue to the 'bottom' of the coral and not on the sides or the head. Moving them around will make them stay closed longer, so I would glue it to a piece of rubble and put it in the tank and leave it. They need oxygen and nutrients etc so I wouldn't leave him out of the tank for long.

Ok, I put them back in, just set them on the bottom where I can see them. If they open, I will get some glue and glue them on the rocks. Thanks, guess I get impatient.

Still not open, but did glue them to some rocks so fish and hermits can't knock them around. Still hoping. I also noticed a polyp on the back of one of my rocks that only opens at night. I don't know what it is, very small. I have been checking my tank at night, lots of worms and sometimes I see what looks like a small black hair sticking out of a rock? Any ideas what the polyp or hair is?
Thanks for asking, Gail

Did you acclimate the corals? Have you done a coral dip?

I floated the bag until the same temp, then took them out of the bag and dropped them in, so guess the answer to your question is no. Total newbee.

Thats fine you gotta learn. Some People say it is absolutely necessary to acclimate things, But I do not agree. I do acclimate some things that are not as hardy, But not always. I dont always even float the bag. Do you have any coral dip?

Yes. I do not know how much better it is that a FW dip though. Wait for an expert to chime in. I use coral dip and I had about 10 bugs come off of a 6 polyp Armor Of God

Types of worms send out tentacles to catch stuff in the water column, it sounds like maybe that is what you are seeing. I know our tank is a whole different place at night. Different things come out (and creep me out).
Where did the coral come from? I try to dip the stuff that comes from the ocean before putting it in my tank. If I get something from a friend's tank that has been running awhile and has no issues I don't dip, I just acclimate.
If the zoos don't make it I have some you can have. The frag fest will be a good place to pick up some stock as well.

I'd be careful using chemical dips. I used one once and the new happy coral was dead within hours of dipping. I haven't used it since.
Also not all bugs that come off are bad, but all the bugs/pests "should" come off in the FW dip.
You will know they are dead when they are gone... poof... vanish
In the meantime, it might help to put them somewhere safe. If you have a sump with a light you could put a bowl (not metal) in the sump so they get flow and light without blowing away. If you don't have a sump you could try putting the bowl in the tank, but the fish may still bother them.
Good luck with them.

I actually didn't even add the full dose to the dip.
As for the FW dip... I just use tap water that is about the same temp as the tank water.  (you can fill a gallon size ziplock bag with the FW and float it to get the right temp.  If you use a bag pour the water in a bucket or bowl before dipping to avoid spills :) )  Then I just soak the piece in there for a minute or two (sometimes more if it is a big piece).  Then gentley "shake" the piece in the water to help get anything else off of it.  (If pests do fall of I usually soak it for another minute or so)  I visually inspect the piece out of water.  Then just put it in the tank. The worst pests I have found on zoos are spider crabs (super creepy), sundial snails, and nudis.  Also beware of some kinds of sponges that grow under or next to zoo colonies.  They can sometimes grow over zoos or under them making the mat weak. Note it is usually the bigger pieces that are "wild" that have the pests (as apposed to frags), IMO you can't be too careful.

If I were you, I would get rid of the angel!  I definitely learned my lesson the hard way with the angels that "Are Sometimes" reef safe.  Other than that, just give the little zoas time to open up.  I have had some open up after 2 weeks and they are the nicest ones in my tank.
Good luck!

Many people on the board use only tap water and have beautiful tanks running. Check with your local water company for details or you can send your water to be tested to find out what's in it. I have used tap water for years and it is only recently that I started using R/O. I thought for sure Magna water would kill stuff off, but they've done great.
