i want to invest in t5 lighting for my fish tank. i want it to be a reef one but not sure what to get.  i have a hood and want the lighting to hang from the hood. please give me ideas of whats good and cheap.

I would use a retro fit kit from Reefgeek. Depending on tank size I would start with at least 4 bulbs.

You get what you pay for in T5. Finding something used is usually the best choice. The ebay specials are never worth it IMO.

What are the dimensions of the 50 gallon? 36x18x18?

Check out the links I posted. They will answer a lot of your questions. If the tank is 18" front to back then I would look into running 6 bulbs for coverage.

If you want SPS then you will need a good setup. Something like this would work:
