I agree with Dion. Run water through it very slow.
The other thing that I believe UV does is to create either O3 or some other chemical change in the water that somehow inhibits the Ich parasite. I have seen tanks where the Ich was gone within 2 days after using UV.

I did a bunch of research on this.  From all the experts I read from most of them said a UV sterilizer didn't do much good.  You would have to run all of your water through it to accomplish what you are trying to do and run it slow enough to take affect.  I have used a large nice UV sterilizer for a while.  I didn't notice any difference using it and not.  So I don't use it anymore and my tank water looks great and my sand bed is sparkly clean.  I'm careful about the fish I pick up and dip my corals.  And I have a bunch of algae in my sump, thanks to Mark.
