Topic: Best glue? Posted: November 22 2011 at 2:33pm |
So if I want to take a frag (either a stony or a frag on a small rock) and glue it underwater in my tank to a big rock.... which glue should I use?
Someone must have a favorite thick, fast drying awesome glue.

I've always taken a big glob of superglue gel on the bottom of the coral (and yes, I've used it where the glob was bigger than the coral) and placed it underwater. The glue glob's outside will start to harden, so when you have the coral in place, press on the glob, and smear the glob on the rock. Yes, you'll get some on your fingers. Superglue gel actually needs moisture to harden, so it's perfect for working with underwater. It just takes a bit more than what you'd use outside the water. I also like gluing underwater b/c the water helps disperse the heat generated (exothermic reaction). And, most superglue gels are all the same...cyanoacrylate. Get what's cheapest - I use the DollarTree's 3 pack Super Glue Gel for $1. I hate using epoxy b/c it doesn't harden as quickly as the superglue (which means potential coral damage as you try to hold everything in place), and you can't smear it in as well as superglue (so you get those weird ugly epoxy bases). Just my $0.02.

I like the Maxi-Cure extra thick super glue. 2oz. bottle for MRS Hobby Shop in Sandy is around $9.

Linn | I really think you get more out of 1 tube of ic-gel then 18 tubes of super glue jel. Just try it once and compare for yourself.

For underwater gluing I like the cheap 3 for $1 tubes that you use for the one underwater glueing and then throw the rest a way but for other stuff I really like the Gorilla glue brand super glue that I get at walmart.

I've started using the new eco tech coral glue. That stuff is amazing. You can squirt it on anything underwater and it is solid in 10 seconds. It's not for cheapskates but you get enough to last half a lifetime. You can find it at http://ecotechmarine.com/parts-store/ They have a video on their website on how to use it also. You can watch the video at http://ecotechmarine.com/media-gallery/video/coral-glue-mov/

I have been having much better success with gluing frags since I have been using a combination of Super Glue Gel ( I buy the 3 for a dollar from the Dollar store ) and Epoxy ( JB WaterWeld brand) Make a small ball of epoxy, put some super glue gel on it and stick to the rock you want your frag on. Then put some more Gel on the bottom of the frag and stick it to the epoxy. Works great for me. HTH
