My wife and I are going to Hawaii next year. We have the option of going to kauai, o'ahu, Maui, or the big island! We are very excited to have the chance to be in hawaii and we were wondering what you guys thought was the best place to scuba and snorkel. My wife and I are thinking about getting open water certified before we go. I looked on the other threads and I know that many of you have been to hawaii multiple times. My dad is coming too and he has said he is not going to get scuba certified so we also need some good snorkeling places too.

When I was a teenager we went to hawaii and snorkeled in Hanama  Bay, That is actually what got me into the hobby.

Having been to all of those islands, I'd have to say my favorite was either Kauaii or the big island. O'ahu is too civilized for my tastes and doesn't really feel like a good tropical vacation. For diving, Hawaii isn't my favorite place but the big island is fun since there are cool tunnel networks that you can dive through. The best of these places is Tunnels Beach. We saw a few nurse sharks there last time we went. Another thing you definitely want to do if you go to the big island is the manta ray night dive. Snorkeling or diving, it's an amazing experience. I've got a few different dive books for Hawaii. I'll look trough them and see if I can't remember some of my favorite Kauai dive spots.

We are fortunate to spend a couple weeks in Hawaii every year. For a family of five with lots of different tastes, Maui is our favorite. One of my favorite places to snorkel (probably second only to the British West Indies) is Lanai. I've seen some of the largest and most beautiful fish there, specifically 16" Blond Naso's with 6-8" streamers. But then again, it's Hawaii. You can't go wrong.
