Feather star... definitly not for the beginner!!! Extremely beautiful and equally picky in feeding habits... most waste away in our captive aquariums.

It looked like a feather duster. What do they eat? Are they a filter feeder like most feather dusters?

Hey Suzy..I will definately let you know how he does. BTW,  Mark bought one also.  My phyto cultures are really doing well that I got from you.  Lets see which one my little duster likes. The brown does grow like crazy. Thanks again for the starters. Bob

So far so good...  I love the way it moves around the tank and he does alot of that.  I have seen him raise his arms hopefully to collect the phyto when I dose the tank. I must say he is one of the prettiest inverts in my tank. I caught him hanging upside down on one of my cave arches catching the current with his arms opened. I will keep you all filled in on his progress.

The one I am trying to care for is pretty stationary. It moved a little ways the morning after it arrived in my tank, but when I rearranged the tank on Saturday it stayed pretty much where it landed. I just looked at it. Nighttime seems to be it's favorite, probably because there is more live food.

He didn't make it.  I tried everything including direct feedings.  First his legs started breaking off then about two weeks ago he met his fate. I wonder if Mark's is still alive.

Well, I didn't see the question answered of what it is, so, I will give a quick description

It is a member of the phylum Echinodermata, Class crinoidea.  They are known as feather stars, and are basically the prehistoric lineage of the sea stars, brittle stars, sea urchins, and sea cucumbers.  THey are very awesome, and plentiful in the fossil record.  I think that the feather stars are able to move about, but their close relatives the sea lilies are stationary.  I was amazed to see them in MSM, cuz we couldn't even get a specimen for my biology lab at weber state university.  Keep us updated on how it does Mark,

I'm writing on article on them, so I too am anxious to hear how it is doing (and I want to come take pics if it is still alive).

Adam, I saw Mark the other day and he told me some of the legs were breaking off. That's what happened to mine before it kicked the bucket.

It's looking worse every week. I may have some good pics from early on, I'll let you have if I can retrieve them in the next day or so.
