Topic: frogspawn sting humans? Posted: March 27 2011 at 6:20am |
Hi all, I know frogspawn can sting, but can they sting humans effectively to cause any notice? I'm wondering because after i nudged my new neon green (i think thats the name?), the area that touched it itched for about 2 days. frogspawn or a neurological wierdness? lol
Also, does it need any special feeding at some point in time?

A little reminder on corals that everyone needs to know.
These little guys cannot protect themselves physically,so they do it chemicaly.
Branch Hammer is very toxic and so are Zoas.
What you really need to be careful with is being stung in an open Cut.
Treat all these beautiful lttle animals with the Ute most respect.Gloves,glasses,ect.espically when Fragging,Wash your hands well, and never touch your face or eyes.
Everyone will react differently from the toxins from these little guys,so just take some precautions when handling them.Just Remember,"An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of Cure".

Oh yes they can. When I had a larger one I was reaching in my aquarium and my arm rubbed across it. It stung me three times down that arm it burned like it was on fire and I had welts also had a bit of blurry vision. I had moved this particular piece several times in the past and never had a problem but I must have pissed it off.
I'm not allergic to bees but I seem to be sensitive to corals.

I knew Zoas could be very toxic but I had no idea branching hammer was. Heck I put my arm in salt water itself and it itches like crazy let alone corals. Pam

In short yes it can. It's all about what you are sensitive to. Everyone is different.
I've touched a ton of stuff and have found I only react to a couple things. Haddon's anemones really pack a punch, as do some aussie hammers. Stringrays also hurt pretty bad, longspine urchins don't feel too good either.

I have been stung a few times, just like getting rubbed by a bristle worm. It feels like insulation stuck under your skin.

Zoanthids and Palythoas contain a neurotoxin called palytoxin. It's present in the slime the produce when they get agitated. If you handle them always wash your hands afterwards and don't get it in your hands, eyes, mouth, or any open cuts.
