Topic: attaching xenia Posted: February 07 2006 at 12:13pm |
What's a good way of attaching xenia stalks to rock and how long does it take them to reattach?
Thanks

Use a rubberband, fishing line, etc. Have it just tight enough to hold the xenia in place. It attaches fairly quickly. In fact, I think it attaches quicket than almost any other coral. Maybe a week? or two?

Great! So I just lay the stalk against the rock? It doesn't have to attach at the cut end?

That is correct, the stalk will attach to the rock. I literally used a toothpick to attach several to some porous LBTR and it took about 3 days is all. Xenia will even move if it is not happy with its location.

My xenia attatched in a single day, I was quite suprised. I also just used the rubber band method.

Be careful you don't tie it tight xenia will cut very easily just loose enough to hold it works the best. The fishnet method works well to. You just use a rubberband around a mesh. Helps but it isn't neccessary for xenia.

Just be sure to remove the fishnet before the Xenia attaches to it, also

O.K> I ended up just sticking them in holes in my LR. I imagine they will attach then?

Really, all you need to do is hold them in place, otherwise they will float off.

As long as they stay in the holes they will attach in a few days.

I'd imagine you would want to increase your water flow then.

UPDATE- It has been ten days now and it looks like the Xenia stalks I attached to a small piece of LR rubble (about 1/2-3/4 wide by 2 inches long) with a rubber band have firmly attached and are starting to flow over the rock. The other two stalks I stuck into holes in LR that was about the same diameter as the stalk. These attached in about two days and started to spread. All are doing fine and it looks as if there are some buds starting to form lower on the stalks. Could these be new branches?

yeah, in a couple of months you'll have so much xenia, you won't know what to do with it. xenia will even drop "sprouts" and spread to other parts of the tank. Just FYI, LFS's have a hard time getting xenia (doesn't easily ship). Some will even give in-store credit. At least the one by me does. But, it must be attached to a small piece of rock.

Thanks, that's good to know! I only have a 24g, so in a couple months I'll probably be giving away some xenia!!!
