Topic: Floor Joists Posted: April 06 2008 at 1:54pm |
Forgive me for my ignorance as I am a computer technician by trade. I live in a 8 plex on the second floor. How do I find out which way the floor joists run? I think I have an idea because all of the heater vents in the floor run the same way. I think the joists probably run parallel to the vents in the long dimension. Any engineers out there want to chime in?

You can probably figure it out from soffits for HVAC of the apartment below you. Without seeing it, I probably couldn't tell you more than that. But why do want to know? Planning for that 500 gallon tank?

I am paranoid. I have a 72 that I'm setting up against the front wall. I know that this is about 800 pounds. I also have a 20 gallon sump. I'm worried. and want to know if this is a smart idea. I had a 55 gallon hex on that spot for a few months. Just want to be careful.

I wouldn't worry about a 72 gallon setup along an exterior wall.

If the appartment is old, or has older carpet just pull a bit up and look for the nail, or screw pattern. Or if you don't like your neighbors downstairs just set it up in the middle of the floor and fill it. Tag your own items so they don't get confused with the neighbors though so you know what is yours when you get evicted.

LOL, I don't like them. They time their music to coincide with my bedtime. If I'm laying in bed cruisin the net, everything is fine. As soon as I close the lid and grab a pillow, "Thump, thump, Thump" etc... Middle of the floor huh? Thanks for the feedback guys and or girls.

Honestly, take the diffuser off the heat vent and look inside. if it goes down a ways and then toward the center of the room the joists go the opposite direction. it it turns right away to the center of the room then the joists parallel the vent.

Aha, They all take a sharp turn about 4 inches down. So that means my tank is spread across several joists. Thanks for the info.
