Topic: Refugium Bulb Posted: January 11 2012 at 9:46am |
Can someone remind me again of a good bulb to get from Home Depot/Lowes to go in the clamp on fixture to grow macro in my refugium?
Thanks in advance.

If using the compact flourescent bulbs I use the 200W equivelant, I can't remember what the actual wattage is. The 13 watt CF bulbs just don't cut it in my opinon.

I've used 7w-65w. They all work for different size spaces. The 65w bulb is very big, but it is worth it if you have the space.

I use a 16w compact 5000k , it equals a 75 w output its color is daylight and all my rock has retained its purple hue and my algae grows quite well . I got my info from melvs as well but didnt want to order online so i bought local and its close enough from my research .

I think I spent around $26 for it....typically I replaced my CF twist bulb every 6 months because I run my fuge light 24/7, so I am hoping I won't have to replace this led light for at least a couple years....plus the optics are pretty tight so I don't get all the light spillage as I use to in the sump with a normal CF bulb...

I will let you know when I get home from work tonight.....it took me a while to find it at lowes because most of them are a lower K rating than I wanted, but was able to find a 5,600k....Home Depot only had lower K leds

oops, I was off, sorry guys- the led is only at home depot, not lowes....I remember it being difficult finding a cool white par30 bulb, but was only able to find one at home depot and has been working very well at growing my chaeto (doubles per week)

I was a little off on price too...$36 bucks....

I don't change my bulbs until they stop putting out light and I've never had a problem. The bulbs I buy are $1-2 I think. It doesn't take anything special for algae to grow well.

I got those led lights that bur recommended for a breeding tank i have with macro and grows well.
I think I'll switch to the hard glass cf as listed above. I use regular cf with reflectors and use them till they die. They usually break glass into the sump and relectors are always a mess.
THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION!!!

Most any daylight bulb will work great in sumps. Daylights are usually at least 5500K. Sometimes the packaging does not give the kelvin rating so if its not there just get daylight bulbs. Higher wattage the better in my opinion.

I just changed mine today as well. Went to the LED par30 as Bur suggested. Really like the way it sends the light straight towards the refugium and doesn't light up the equipment. So coraline algea doesn't grow in the skimmer and such.
