Topic: Bumps on Clownfish Posted: June 30 2013 at 4:45pm |
I've noticed some bumps on my male clownfish's head recently and was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what could be causing them. Today he seems to be losing some scales and he's been a little less active, but he is still eating so I'm not sure how worried I should be. This is the best photo that I could get with my cell phone, I'll try to get something better later. The bumps are the discolored spots in his first stripe. I added garlic to his food and have done a freshwater dip, but he didn't seem phased by either one.

They aren't white? I've had something like this before but it was white and freshwater dips cured it. What are your water parameters?

really hard to see anything in the picture but i would guess its either...
A. A sting from an anemone or coral the fish is attempting to host with...
Really nothing to worry about if that is the case. Maybe add some vit c to your food to aid in healing.
B. Ich....
Check the rest of your livestock for small white dots, small bumps, and loose/missing scales.
Although some people claim to never get it almost all tanks will get ich at some point in time. If you added anything new to the tank recently without proper quarantine you most likely intruduced some ich. As long as you treat it as soon as you notice the ich it is pretty easily beatable. There are several threads here with various methods on treating.
Get a better quality picture for a better diagnosis!

I'm already dosing vit c daily and I just moved him into a quarantine tank. He's moving around more this morning, so I was planning on doing another freshwater dip.
I've added a slightly better picture above, but I'm still trying to get a hold of a digital camera. Mine stopped working a couple of months ago.

still a bit hard to see. it is looking more like stings to me than a parasite. do you have an anemone or any stinging corals the clown has been trying to host?

In the pic the bumps or marks seem to be only on the white areas of the fish. Is that correct? My first thought was the same as 1stupidpunk's. I have a clownfish that tried hosting with my euphilia and got stung in several areas but they showed up as dark brown spots on the orange portions of the fish. They went away on their own after about a month.

He and my other clown actually seem to be hosting the back left corner of my tank and I don't have an anemone. I can't think of any corals that would be stinging him either. As of right now, I have several different zoas and palys, dendro, micromussa, favia, xenia, a toadstool and kenya tree. There's also a rabbitfish in the tank, but I don't think he'd be the problem either.
I haven't noticed the marks on the darker parts of his body either.
My boyfriend's mother offered to let me borrow her camera for the day, so I will upload a better picture soon.

Keep in mind that most things may take longer to go away then they do to show up. :)
