my wife and I were wondering on the number of fish that could go in our 300 gallon tank.  I know Brad says he has like 50 in his 225, but I think most of his are smaller fish.

Today I sat down and listed out our 28 fish we have in our aquarium in a spreadsheet (Reefdup, aren't you proud??) and put the common name, the actual scientific name, then listed the maximum size the fish get.  Come to find out several of my wife's picks for fish get very large, like well over a foot in length.  She is now scared we have too many fish in our tank.

The online calculators that she tried and we looked at would basically only have 10 fish in our tank if any of them are of any size.  I just can't buy their calculations.

I do have a lot of tangs, which are what get the biggest in my tank.  What does everyone think a good rule of thumb is?  I have read several and they don't make sense to me.

Here is what we currently have in the tank.  The yellow tang and the sailfin tang are both about to be pulled and one put in my frag tank, the other will go in my son's tank as the only other inhabitant with the clowns.  Probably "bubbles" will go in his tank, forgive him, he IS 9 years old and love finding nemo!!!!  the max size listing on these fish come from mostly liveaquaria.com, I find it a hugely useful site for data and writeups on fish.

all the ones that are 12 inches in max size or bigger are what worry me.  I can't have 6 fish over a foot long each in my tank.  That is one of the reasons the sailfin is going into a frag tank, that and he is a total ass towards other fish sometimes.

The problem with "max sizes" are that they're not always the size your fish will reach. Also, a lot of people have TONS of fish in a seemingly undersized tank. Adam Blundell and Teknik both have a ton of fish in their systems. I do believe the key is having amazing filtration and feeding properly to support all fish. Quarantining is very important on such a tank since one fish can infect everything.

Mac -

FYI, Tileman's tank is  a 335g... he swapped out the 225g awhile back. So he has got 50 fish in a 335... Don't want to short change him 110g Wink

That being said, I would think you should be fine with 30 fish in your setup. You have a good, large skimmer, and a refugium and UV going... As far as filtration type things, I would probably just add another of those Jebao wp60's (maybe even 2) to up the water flow.

Even with some of the fish you already have, I wouldn't expect your Vlamingi, etc to get 2 feet long. Or the triggers to get a foot long. Dave Anderson had several large tangs in his 700 gallon tank; from my recollection the largest ones were about a foot long (and most were smaller).

I say 30 fish, because I think you would have to do a few extra things if you cross that 30 - fish window... like, more frequent water changes, add a denitrator and ozone generator (like Brad runs), etc.

Your tank is pretty much the same size as Brad's, so you could push 50 if you really wanted to. Just remember, that in Brad's tank he has many of his fish 'small / medium' sized (5" or less), and he still has to be pretty vigilant with the water changes and dosing, run a dentirator and ozone, etc.

I agree.  If well fed, healthy, and getting along.... then initially this looks fine to me.  I have over 40 in my 300 gal.

Adam
Come to a meeting, they’re fun!

I hadn't thought about it, but I just counted 30 fish in my ~120 gal 4 tank system, the one that starts with a 40 breeder in the window and ends with a standard 55 on the floor. Gosh, the fish I just placed in the 40 breeder is a 4" juvenile Acanthuras Olivaceous/Orange Shoulder/Phillippine Yellow Tang which grows to 14" in the wild. Big smile
Aloha,
MarkHug
