I've been thinking about adding a sump/refugium to my 18 gallon tank. Only prob is that it has been set up for over a year. I've poked around some sites but haven't really found anything on setting a sump up after the main display is going.

anybody have some advise?

i ran a 30 gallon for 2 years without a sump and recently just added one... its not a problem at all, especially since your tank is small enough you can move it to get behind it.   i'm not sure if you want to drill one that small, but i wish i would have drilled mine if i had to do it again.

i use a CPR overflow hardplumbed with pvc down into an acrylic sump going back up via pvc to a "ring" around the top with 6 lock line heads coming out of that and i get great flow without too much in one direction out of any of the heads.

wish i had done it sooner!

Is it a glass or acrylic tank?

Dion, are you asking because you are thinking vangvace should drill the tank if he is adding a sump? Good call to bring that up. I would drill the tank if you could. I speak from experance
As far as being worried about adding one now that your tank is setup. I would do it. A sump and refugium are a great benifit. I see no reason why it would cause a problem.

If it is acrylic then it makes life very easy. I have two tanks that I drilled after they were set up. If its glass then I would have Eric drill it. I wouldn't do it while set up though. If its acrylic I would be happy to show you how to drill it and explain the plumbing.

Otherwise use a good quality overflow box. I saw one in doc fosters yesterday that used a lift pump to prevent trapped air from breaking the siphon.

Be forwarned however that overflow boxes are notorious for causing floods. I would dare say that a good majority of the members here have had the same bad experiences that I have with these devices. Just my 2cents.

One of the tanks is a 12g eclipse with a 5.5g sump/refug.
