Topic: Bad Idea??? Updated Posted: August 09 2005 at 8:06am |
I am getting 40 lbs tomorrow that was picked from the ocean today. My question is how much is a little that everyone keeps talking about. Would it be safe to add all 40 lbs at once???
I am setting up my 210 tonight and filling it with crushed coral and sand tomorrow. I have around 100/150 lbs in buckets ready to go. I am wondering if I could SAFELY take 100 lbs from my current system without doing to much damage to the bio filter. Its a 120 with a 5 inch deep bed. I want to get the new one up & ready for transfer within a month or so..

I agree with Eric.
Are you moving everything over from the old tank to the new? That can be done within a few weeks if you were to get the new tank up and running with the sand you have and a gallon or two of LS from the old tank, and move rock over a little at a time. If they are to go in the same location, placing stuff in tubs around the room a little at a time is a way to do it.
Good reefing.

Connie, don't rush it. I'm anxious for your old tank but have learned patience. I'm just as excited to see the 210 up and running and lookin' good. (besides, I have SO much to do to get ready)

steal water from the 120. Thats a little bit of bio. and then a few cup fulls of sand every few days. You know the grunge that will be in the deep sand. Don't stir that up. You'll start ALL OVER. NaStY. when you gonna post pics of the tank? and or setup plans for pickin apart?

I will just give my warning that your system will flood, bulbs will burn out, and things will take continuous maintenance... get over it.

Another good option is... while going slowly, for each piece of LR you
take out, put in a piece of Utah Rock. You will gradually be able to take
out more and more of your LR for the transfer, as the Utah Rock will build
it's bio.

How much is a little at a time. I put a 1/2 gallon this first day of sand. The next day only 3 cups but did move some small LR peices. The next day more LR and last night 1/2 gallon sand and Lrg. 20lbs LR. Tomorrow I have 40 lbs coming from LiveRocks.com. It is picked from the Ocean and shipped the same day. Tons & tons of hitchickers. Can I add it all at once???

Connie when you get this rock let us know what you think of it. I am thinking of buying some more and don't know if I should go with tampabaysaltwater.com or if someone else is just as good.

This is my third order with them. I am very pleased with it. It comes with zoos, plants, crabs, stars. I even had a peacock pistol with my last order.

I think I hi-jacked my own thread.... Anyway, how much is a little at a time??
Josh
I always get the Keys.. Well worht the extra money. That is why I prefer to get rock over the net. It is very fresh & they dont pick off the stuff thats on it. My last order of 40 lbs had at least 15 small to med brittle stars and 20 or more crabs. There was no ammonia spike when I added it and no die off I could see. Some people say they had a fish in theirs. That be pretty cool...

The new LR should go into the old mature tank where it will come back to full life within 1-2 weeks depending on it's condition. Leave the lights on as usual. LR does better when the lights are left on as usual. It would also help to have your refugium lights on 24/7. to help absorb nutrients/pollutants from the new LR. The macroalgae that grows on new LR looks beautiful and helps filter the pollutants created by dieing organisms within the LR.
A little at a time...I would move it probably 2-4 times that fast. Even faster if it was all moved in water rather than allowing it to drain before taking it across the room. Water droplets falling out of the LR allow air bubbles to enter. Marine organisms in LR die from air bubbles trapped in their burrows.
