    Posted: June 15 2005 at 1:31pm

I was trying to decide if I should take out my filter bag or not.  I just put in a 10g refugium and The water from the refuguim is running through the filter bag into my 18g sump and then back to the 90g tank.  Would it be better to take out the bag so the pods get sucked up into the main tank?  Since I put in the refugium,  I am finding more and more pods that get trapped in the bag.  I usually just pick off the pods and feed them to the tank.  I'm thinking it might be easier to just get rid of the bag and let them return to the tank themselves, but my worry is that they would just get sucked up in the protein skimmer instead of going to the tank.

any advice?  thanks in advance

I have filter bags on my tank 24x7.  I also see quite a few bugs in the bags when I change them.   But I have so many bugs in the tank that the few in the bags are not a huge loss.  I do pick off as many as I can and put them back in the tank.

I think the filter bags are a great benefit to keeping the tank clean.  They have also save a fish or two that have gone down the overflows!!

I also change the bags every 7-10 days or when they start to overflow.  They turn brown so they must be catching something.

Thanks for sharing.  There are so many different opinions on filtration; I just like to hear what everyone else does.  I change my sock about once a week and the water in the washing mashine turns a dark brown while washing the sock.  To me it seems like a good filtration tool; I just want to make sure most everyone else thinks so.

Does it matter where the bag goes?  It seems like it would collect fewer bugs if the water from the tank ran through the filter bag before going to the refugium.

It does matter where the bag goes.
One of the five purposes of a refugium is to provide food for the main tank. If you look at it, the name actually applies directly to the microinverts that find refuge there. As they breed, their offsping are often free-floating and should find themselves traveling to the main tank where they become food for fish, and larger inverts including coral.

That's what I thought... so rhymechizel, don't you have the filter bag in the wrong place?

Looks like I do have it in the wrong place.  I'll have to switch it.

The filter sock was my way of keeping micro bubbles down from the refuguim dumping into the sump.  Now I just have to figuer out how to keep the micro bubbles down without the filter sock.
