Topic: 14k or 20k Posted: June 30 2005 at 3:48pm |
I am going to put a 250 W hqi over my 29 and I wanted to see if anyone knows where I could see the difference between the two ( 14k and 20k), online or if anyone has pics. Are there benefits either way? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The bulb Fax has is awesome. It brings out lots of color - it is a nice mix between the really blue of a 20k and the growth gains found in a 10k.
All you have to do to decide is ask yourself one question-
Do I prefer growth or color?
Growth = 10k
Color = 14k
Personally, I wouldnt go 20k when there is such a nice alternative in the Phoenix 14k. The 20's are usually just too blue, and just dont put out enough PAR.

Take some advice from someone who had 20K over their tank, go with the 14K. The color was really nice with the 20K, but nothing really grew. I have 10K and am amazed at the growth I've had in just a month with them.

CoreyK has A combination of both... He is a great example.
I recommend 14K phoenix bulbs, they rival 10Ks in Par, and 20Ks in color.

I have an extra 14K if you want to borrow it to see if you like it. You may be able to borrow someone else's 10K. I really don't think you need to try them though. The 14's are really the best choice.
Or... that whole pendant isn't going to work out for you and you need to sell it quick, right???
By the way, I bought shane's other pendant, and both of his 14K bulbs. I'm setting up a 90g now and wish I would have bought the other pendant.

Thanks guys it sounds like 14k is the way to go, now here is the other question where is a good place to get the bulbs for a decent price? And it sounds like phoenix is the better brand or does it matter? Thanks again.
Sorry about that Fax but I think it is going to be the perfect light for my tank. I hope that makes ya feel better a little bit better .

Yes ... get the phoenix! They are great ... Much better than Hamilton IMO. I will eventually work my tank over to all 14K.

I am also contemplating on using 14Ks with actinics. I am currently using XM 20K and really like the color. Another alternative is 15K XM but I heard that the PAR on the 15K XMs is actually lower than that on the 20Ks. How is the par rating of the 14K phoenix ? Fax, what wattage bulb do u have? I am looking to check out someones tank with either 14K or 15K XMs to get an idea.

I have the Aqua Medic 250W DE pendant. Welcome to come by whenever. Call and let me know when you are coming over, or just come over and snoop around the tank, my staff knows how it is, and people come by all the time just to look. The key's on top if you want to look in the cabinet.
