Jake, thank for the posts.  I too prefer substantiated facts over conjecture... they were good reads.

What?  Bob Goeman preaches plenums?  The same Bob Goeman that endores's the Eco Aqualizer?  I don't think Bob'$ ever met a product he ha$n't liked.  Maybe I'll stick to dsbs

Hi, Guys! I want to try to "reduce" our DSB to a shallow oolitic if it's possible. Our DBS hasn't reduced our nitrate level at all, and I'm getting really tired of going to Albertson's for water changes. If I take out the large particle DSB we have now, really slowly (like a cup a day?) and replace it with sugar sized sand,(Maybe start on one side of the tank and work my way to the other side) what do you think is the worst that can happen? We already got an algae issue.....(I'm thinking I don't have enough abalones, lettuce nudi's....Haven't seen 'em since I bought 'em!)

Suzy, why don't you build yourself a coil denitrator if your having trouble reducing your nitrates.  I personally don't have any experience with them but from what I understand they are very cheap to build, cost zero to run and work fantastic.  There are several links to plans listed on this page. http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/chilladddenitradiy/

Suzy,

After our telephone conversation yesterday I need to make a comment.

All this while that you were having problems with cyano and you were never doing water changes! You went a full year without and just did your first change a week ago!  This is a lesson for all of us. Don't forget the basics. It begs the question, what else are you doing or not doing that may be causing problems. I shudder to think about it!

Mark, with our 55, I just tested and added chemicals. We went through the algae cycles but never had an issue w nitrates.......The tank looked great! I kinda thought this tank would work the same way, only on a larger scale.....

Bob Goemans has lost a lot of credibilty over the Eco-aqualizer.  Also, I was at the Goemans lecture on plenums and listened to his "scientific" explaination of how or why a plenum works (total BS ment to WOW people without scientific laboratory experience. Very Sad.

I have to weigh in with a bunch of others above.

Bob Goemans had absolutely no basis for his assertions. he stayed at my house, and I spent a few hours with him on this topic. Lots of hand waving, no real factual basis for anything he said.

I have tried just about everything over the years. I am not a supporter of the plenum. The DSB seems to be more factually supported. The Plenums seem to "crash" after a few years (mine did too!) and result in a huge algae outbreak that you cannot ever control.

I currently use and advocate the aragocrete bed, with a DSB refugium. My tank is doing great! Feel free to come see it! Of course, not everyone has the luxury of a huge refugium, but I wouldn't do a tank any other way now that I've tried it. I should mention that I have tried berlin, 2 inch sand, fine thin sand, plenum, and now DSB in refugium with bare arogocrete base. Its the wave of the future, I am telling you! all the benefits of DSB without disturbing your show tank!
