Has anyone used magnesium chloride from the chem shop to bring up the magnesium levels and if so how much do you mix and for what size tank?

Hopefully Jon Finch will comment. I think he had mentioned in the past that you could use it from there instead of mag flake. (I think you can get food grade so you would be ok). Most use it to maintain magnezium in the 2 part addative stuff. None the less here is a calculator you can use -- Mag calculator

I think you can use the MgCl2 from The Chem Shop... I've used a few times in my tank without issue.  Use as much as you need to bring your Mg up.  The MgCl2 from The Chem Shop is ~10% Mg by weight.

Mix it up 8 parts MgCl2 to 1 part epsom salt for a more "balanced" additive.

It's tech grade, made from the Solvay process so it has some ammonia inherent in the salt.  As long as you're not boosting your Mg levels by hundreds of ppm, the amount of ammonia is pretty minimal and is quickly consumed by your tank.

Jon, thanks.  I bought some from a LFS and after dissolving it, I found some serious black junk.

Goodness, Will, there is life outside of the Salt Lake Valley.
