Topic: marine ick or what? Posted: July 22 2007 at 10:25am |
hey all .
i'm new here but not new to fish tanks.. yesterday i noticed my one of hippo tangs had some big white spots on him, almost like discoloration. one spot was on his bottom fin, and i could almost see through it. now today that spot is gone, he has more, and the other hippo has them too. should i be alarmed? i have two hippos, two ocealaris clowns. a morroon ocealaris? three green chromis, a lawnmower, a flame angle, and a fire shrimp. mostly soft corals. one hard. two anenome. one anenome crab.. fifty five gallon. had it running for six or seven months now.
i tried to catch one in a pic.. fast little suckers. any way, any info would be appreciated

Welcome!
I don't know much about fish diseases so hopefully someone else will answer soon. Big white spots don't sound like Ich to me but I do know Hippo Tangs get Ich easily.

feeding garlic extract is good to help with Ich .. it also helps prevent it when fed once or twice a week ... As mike stated .. big white spots dose not sound like ich to me ... Marine Ich looks exactly like fresh water Ich ... is it fuzzy by chance? .. it could be a fungus ... if thats the case you will more then likely have to remove the fish from thank into a hospital tank and dose medication there .. never dose anything to your reef ...
BTW Welcome to WMAS! ...

What do you feed the fish? What are the tank params? Salinty, ph, alk, etc.
Do you ever see the fire shrimp cleaning the tangs?

get ready for this.. all of the spots are gone. all fish are perfect looking. i don't understand it, but i like it. i feed spectrum pellets in the morning. mysis shraimp, bloodworms, and spirulana brines in the evenings. also clip seaweed two or three times a week. salinity-good, ph-8.2, alk.-8.4 (just tested), temp-76, and calcium has never been under 475.
the shrimp was on a fish at the store i got him from.. but sadly i've never seem him on them. he's still getting use to the aqurium though..
i'll keep you's updated.

I'm glad the spots are gone. I wonder what it was though.

From my experience I am guessing that it was simply a "rub" spot. Blue tangs tend to wedge themselves into funny spots and end up with little white spots from the scrape on the rock. Hopefully it isn't a disease or parasite, but mine have spots that come and go all the time.

so my tank had always had high alk.. new tank. couple weeks ago i started adding cal. alk. buffer. the fish were fine yesterday. i added some this morning, now they have spots. i think it's the buffer that's doing it. maybe i should do more small doses instead of one a week.

I dose daily to keep the parameters as stable as possible. Dosing this morning then seeing Ich spots is coincidental IMHO. They wouldn't show results that fast.

the ick has worsened.they now have white spots, and sores. the spots stick up off the fish. looks like ick.
i have a small uv light that has been in this tank since it was a freshie tank.. a little over a year old. i was thinking about upgading. also thinking about another cleaner shrimp. on account of the tangs going behind my big rock where the fireshrinp is..
i bagan dosing garlic oil in their food yesterday morning. seems to have helped a little bit. but they still look icky.. poor little guys

My clowns just got out of quarantine for ich. I thought my fish didn't have it because the spots kept appearing and disappearing too. Out of everything I read this article helped me the most. Hope it helps you too and you can figure out what is wrong with your fish....

Here is a list of the symptoms
List of Possible Clinical Symptoms
- White spots about the size of a printed period or pinhead. This parasite is usually noticed on the skin and fins first and later the eyes - Usually some, but not all, of the fish appear to be affected until the disease has progressed - Increased mucus production - Hyperactivity in early stages - Scratching (flashing) on objects within the aquarium - Shuddering or twitching - Seeking shelter or hiding - White spots that seem to disappear only to return several days later - Increased respiration rate, except in early stages - Cloudy eyes associated with secondary bacterial infection - Faded colors - Fin rot or other secondary bacterial infection in late stages - Multi-focal, de-pigmented skin erosions - Staying near the water surface or in areas of high water velocity - Lack of appetite in advanced stages - Dehydration and rapid weight loss in late stages |
Some of these symptoms take place in the later stages of ich.

I put them into a fresh water soak for 5 mins. Make sure the PH and Temp are the same as your tank and then I used Cupramine it is less harsh than Chelates. They handled both very well. Just make sure you check the parameters in your quarantine tank often.

Make sure that you treat all of the Fish NOT the inverts with copper. Do not treat with copper in your display tank it can kill LR and inverts. Other people I talked to used hyposalinity but you need a refractometer for that.

If they had ich, it will still be in the tank, they need to be removed so that they don't get reinfected. It has four stages. The first stage is when they are on the fish for 3-7 days, The second stage they exit the host and look for a place to adhere, next they adhere to something and reproduce and the final stage they release and look for a host. If they don't find a host they die and the cycle is over but this cycle can take 28 days to complete.
I dreaded removing my fish and putting them in quarantine too.
