Topic: New Sea Slug discovered? Posted: January 12 2010 at 9:16pm |
A green sea slug appears to be part animal, part plant. It's the first critter discovered to produce the plant pigment chlorophyll.

I think the closest you'll get to one of these in LFS is a lettuce leaf nudibranch

Thats awesome, i know many nudibranchs are capable of Zooxanthellal use once its in their cerci, they look very similar to berghia. But actually being able to incorporate genetics and acquiring chloroplasts is amazing.
I can already hear it now, isolate the mechanism that allows this, inject it into us and then everytime we eat veggies we get chloroplasts and can then photosynthesize from the sun.
Talk about being "GREEN", now who is first to try it?

These are cold water species.
Part animal part plant.
But using the gene and passing it on?
This is a little different than coral and their zooxanthellae. Coral continuously export and import their zooxanthellae. It's especially noticable when they bleach and then regain color. Often the color is different than the original and sometimes it's the same color as another coral in the aquarium.
