    Posted: April 02 2006 at 11:54pm

I bought a new 40 breeder over the weekend and want to integrate it into my current reef system. (- so much for keeping just my 120)  I'm leaning towards a clownfish/anemone tank or a pipefish/macro tank.  I realize that there's another post with a similar thread, but I'm not one to hijack.

If I do the clownfish/anemone tank, I'm considering  either a two-band, a perc, a false perc, or a pink skunk.  The anemones I'm considering would be a BTA or Long tentacle.  What are your thoughts? (I've been studying Joyce Wilkerson's book, too)

I think the pipefish idea may be beyond my skill level.

I can always use the 40 piggyback as an extra 'fuge, or as a dedicated frag and peaceful fish tank.  It will be downstairs, just at or slightly above the current sump, using drain water from the 120 upstairs for flow.   In other words the 120 is fed by my pump, and maybe 1000 gph of the drains feed the 40 , but all drains eventually end up in the 80g sump.  I figure between 210 and 220 gallons total system volume.

I think it sounds pretty cool.

I'd use it as a dedicated frag tank. Therefore I would stay away from anemones and would go with pipefish.

I think it sounds like a good idea.  I personally think it's neat to breed the fish.  I mean, it makes you feel good that they are happy enough in the enviroment you've provided for them, to reproduce.  The anemones aren't a bad idea either, they can just be a PITA sometimes.

Perhaps I would be better at basket weaving. . . at least it would be cheaper!

Corey,

The more I think about this and your "sump" room downstairs, I think I would plumb a dedicated frag tank into your present system. This would be a very convenient way to grow out frags withoug having to get another skimmer, pump, etc. Add a nice MH pendant and you're ready to go.

However, I really like the idea of an anemone tank as well. What about adding this w/out plumbing into the main system? Use the existing system for water changes into the anemone tank, but keep it independent. With the right maintenance, you could likely go skimmerless and sumpless.

Corey,

You've got so much room in your main display for frags, I don't know that you'd benefit by having a dedicated frag tank for a while. Timing-wise, I think you are in an great situation to try a clown/Swissguard nursery for now. If it doesn't work out, you still have a frag tank that you will more likely need in a year or two. Remember to invite me over when you get it set up.

Shane,

I think the idea is to keep all of the equipment I have now and only add a light (translation- more efficient system/lower power bill/no big issues with my wife).  I don't want too much more maintenance.  A single pendant would be nice.

Jamison,

I'll be sure to invite you over.

Thanks for your ideas, guys!  Any more thoughts?
