Topic: Pistol Shrimp - HELP! Posted: April 13 2009 at 7:22pm |
I think we have a pistol shrimp hiding in one of our rocks. We also have a fairy wrasse who seems to have an injury that has disabled it's back half. It seems like it is dying, but then it has a flurry of energy and swims off with it's front fins. The wrasse has been sleeping by the entrance to the shrimps cave. Could the shrimp have injured the fish?
We have seen indications of it for some time, but finally saw it better today while relandscaping an area of the tank.
Suggestions???? Will it hurt my fish or corals?
Thanks.

If you have an injured fish and you think it might have been caused by the shrimp, I would believe you have a mantis shrimp and not a pistol shrimp. I have never had any problems with pistol shrimps and fish. Now if it is a mantis shrimp, you will need to get that little guy out of there asap before it causes more damage to your fish. If for some reason it is a pistol shrimp, then I would be looking for other explanations for the injury of your wrasse.

So if it a pistol shrimp should I remove it or leave it. It makes snapping sound when my husband pokes something in its little hidey-hole. I haven't seen the whole thing yet - just it's face and claws. It moves very fast!

Mantis shrimp have unique eyes. If he has seen its face then he will be able to tell from the big eyes.

If it is a mantis shrimp they get there nick name for a reason. Thumb smashers and tank breakers are two that come to mind.

I actually saw the whole thing last night and it appears to be a pistol shrimp. My husband doesn't trust it . . . he'd like to get it out of the tank.
I'm not sure if we can catch it though. It lives in a cave in a big rock and piles things up in the entrance so you can't see into it's space. It's probably been there for 6 months to a year. We had seen indications of it, but not the shrimp itself before now except the occaisional claw reaching out to pull in a piece of gravel.
Could it have killed a small crab? We had a crab that had hitchhiked it's way into the tank, and I think I saw little crab remains in the cave last night.

Get a watchman gobie or other shrimp gobie to go with it. Awesome to watch together!! I don't think a pistol shrimp would take out a healthy crab but you never know.

We have a pistol and a shrimp gobie. They are awesome. I would leave it. I doubt the shrimp got the fish, they are almost blind. And their popping sound is pretty cool. THe pistol shrimp was on the most extreme animals on animal planet, turns out they are the loudest animal on the earth.

I would leave the pistol shrimp too. I have never had a problem with mine, other than I never really see it. They are really fun to watch when paired up with a fish.

Once again, if you really dont want to keep it, I will take it off your hands. They are pretty easy to scare out of a rock if you can pull that rock out of the tank.
