Topic: Replacing a Bulkhead - Can't get it off Posted: May 18 2008 at 5:12pm |
My bulkhead in my refugium leaks and I need to replace it. However, I can't get it off. The tools I have can't grab it (the bulk head is close to the top and side of the refugium). Any ideas on what I can use. I'll see if I can get a pic for the visual.

Is their a reason it's installed that way? I would put the replacement with threads on the outside so they can't build up coraline/calcium. If that's the reason it's stuck you could try soaking it in vinegar/muriatic acid (I know this is difficult with it installed..)
I would be tempted to just break it (squeeze it with the pliers until it cracks -- being careful not to crack the sump)

Is the wrench not big enough or does it keep slipping off of the nut?

Maybe you could break or cut the nut?

a Dremel would make quick work of it but it wouldn't be reusable.

I finally got it off. What a PITA.
I did install the new one the opposite way. Thanks for your advice. Now, I still have to figure out how to keep the UV Sterilizer from flooding my floor. I guess I will figure out a way to hang it from the top of the stand instead of off the back vertically. This stuff hurts my head!

Glad you were able to get it off! Did Jeff from LifeReef install them backward like that for you, or did you just do it in error or out of convenience?
When I ordered my LifeReef equipment, I don't remember if the bulkheads came attached or apart and you self installed them.
I do know however, I love my LifeReef stuff!!

Can you hang the UV so it leaks into the sump?

Why is your UV Sterilizer leaking? A fitting, a hole?

Jeff from LifeReef installed it that way. This is a pic of the revised installation.
The leak from the UV sterilizer is from fittings, there are a ton of them so it can hang on the tank and feed into my refugium. Any time I bump it, it starts to leak. I think I can hang it in the top of the stand with some type of brace. I had my old one like that, but it took up so much room I hated it. Here is the poor thing.
