Topic: Return pump inadequate? Suggestions? Posted: October 17 2005 at 9:27am |
I need to find out if my return pump is inadequate for my current set up, which I believe it is. I barely get a trickle filling up my overflow and what seems to be an inadequate amount returning to my sump. My tank is a 65 gallon All-Glass Megaflow with the built in overflow. The overflow, according to All-Glass’s website is rated at 600 GPH. My current return pump is a Rio 10H, and the return is traveling about 5 ½ to 6 feet, with bends. I’m curious what return pump will give me the proper return to fill the overflow quicker and give me more water flowing into my sump? Thanks for any help.

Definitely underpowered.
To get water back up 5-6 feet to the tank at a rate of 600 gph and with the twists and turns you mentioned (and later as stuff begins to grow on the inside of the pipes) this is probably going to require a Rio 24HF or comparable pump. Magdrive pumps are another good submersible pump. Check the box for exact flow specs.

I have Rio 17hf's running my 60g and my all glass 65g. I had a rio 12hf running my 29g untill reciently. I changed it to a mag3.The 17hf's are doing excellent on the return to both of these tanks. My 60g is being transfered to my new 125. When Im done I will change the pump in my 65g to a mag9. I have found the rio hf pumps to be unreliable. (4 rio12hf in 6 months)

I would say to use a mag9.5. It's rated at 900 gallons, but going up 6 feet with bends, that would probably be closer to 600. I have a 65 gallon tank and the 9.5 is what I use.

Figured the Rio was underpowered. It came with the original hand me down 46 gallon bowfront. Just so I have the math correct, I'm looking for 10x's turnover on water or 600GPH on a 65? Thanks.

Just so I have my math correct, I'm looking to turn the water over 10 times per hour or 600 GPH for my 65? Where's the best place to get a Mag Drive? I live up North, Weber County, but will travel for the right price. Would rather buy from a LFS than online, too. Thanks.

The sad thing is you can buy online for almost half of what the LFS want. (mag 3 locally 76.99, online about 40.00) Check it out. I like to support our LFS but when its twice as much its hard to justify.

WOW! Yeah, I'm for supporting the LFS but not when I can save that much. O.K., who's a good reputable online marine store then?

Search for mag pumps with your search engine and on E-Bay.

This has a price of $79.48 including shipping. BW has the mag3 for 76.99. Which would you rather have? This is the same Pet Solutions that advertizes nation wide. I have bought from them in the past with very good results.
Here is another one. a couple of bucks more.

If you want a rebuilt customer return it can save you some more money.
