Topic: Clams! Posted: October 28 2005 at 12:24pm |
Well today I purchased a few mussels and littlenecks from Albertsons. For one reason, I use tap water ( kalkwasser) for my top off. Although I have never had a algae breakout of any kind I do have alot of diversity in my tank and fuge.I have several macros and mangroves, pods etc. I know clams filter water to include phosphates, etc. My theory, correct me if I'm wrong....add more clams.

I really like that idea! Do they need a sandy substrate?

What kind of clams are they? What do you ask for when you go to Smiths/ALbertson's?

I got two littleneck clams from Albertson's If the shell is not closed tight, it is probably dead already. I put them in my sump...one definately died (open and empty shell). The other one has disappeared...As expected. My understanding was they burrow into the sand.

I happened to get lucky, Albertsons just got a delivery of littlenecks and mussels. The clams will burrow in my fuge sandbed. I have dug for these clams on the east coast sand flats. As for mussels, they like to attach to rocks using their beard. I have a few mussels on a piece of florida rock that I purchased and they do real well. They are now covered in coraline algae and blend in with my rock. If the species that the stores carry do well I'll plant a few in between my live rock. Adam, I think they would do real well in your rubermaid sump along with your mangroves. You have a super deep sandbed in there. I'm thinking that if this works out I'll build a small clam sump and filter water thru that to the main tank also.

Wait! if they are buried in the sand, are they really filtering that much?
Like an osmosis thing? There's no flow there....

Most of these clams have a siphon which extends out into the water. Even though there buried in the bed they will siphon from the water column. Mussels will attach to any rock, macro etc. and stay stationary. I am also looking at Abalone clams. I think there mostly in cold water but I will try those also. I looked at some fresh seafood sites, they have a few varieties of clams. As with most web orders, shipping will cost a few bucks.

Ok, I'm game! I love new stuff!
So, I look in the tanks at the Albertsons? or are these guys just hanging
out of water at the meat counter?
Do you know if they "eat" PO4 specifically?

There at the seafood counter. You have to check and make sure there closed. I'd ask when their getting a new delivery. They are usually shipped and will be fresh.

Update...they all died. I think the problem was these are cold water species. One thing for sure my hermits loved cleaning out the shells. Looks like it's back to deresa's, crocea's etc.

I've had littleneck clams in my sand bed for about 2 months. The only ones that have died are the ones I cracked open for my butterfly. Did your fish chow down on the clams too?

Mostly the hermits in the main tank took car of the two I had in there. The few that I put in my fuge were gobbled up by bristle worms.
