I have recently had a large breakout of red algae. I haven't done anything dif. other than add some live sand to my tank. It is mostly on the sand but there is some on my sponges and on some of my corals. If anyone knows what this is please let me know.

thanks

Dave

Most likely red slime algae aka cyanobacteria.  I'll save Mark Peterson a post here by asking that you disclose your tank setup and parameters such as size, light, filtration system/methods, age, livestock.

Cyanobacteria flourish when there are extra nutrients in the tank and little flow.  Do you have a good skimmer? good refugium with lots of macro growth to export nutrient?  do you have a lot of fish? do you feed a lot?

Just a few question to start the conversation!

Also, if you need macroalgae, I always have lots of free chaeto to give away!
If you can't bedazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bs!

I have a 24g nano cube. The setup is just what came with it. I am not sure about the lighting but I think I may over feed a bit. But it didn't start until I put more sand in from someone's tank who was selling off his stock. I only have 2 percs and 2 blennies for fish. Some zoes, xenia, clam and a few other things.

Thanks,

Dave
