I just picked up my new 120(pic below) The guy I bought it from sanded it down and stained it but didnt treat it.  I really like the look of the wood and would like it flat (not shiny). What should I use to seal this without making it to shiny?

Use a flat spar varnish on it. Depending on whats on it you might be able to have it sprayed with flat lacquer.

There are a number of porducts that you can apply to the wood that will hold up well around salt water. Spar Varnish is definately durable but if you are doing it yourself is has a very strong odor. I would not recommend using laquer around moisture. My favorite product is McKloskies (probabibly butchered the spelling) Diamond Coat. This is a water based polyurathane. It has low odor and is very durrable. It comes in a variety of sheens. I would recommend one step up from flat and use an egg shell or satin finish. This will make the wood a little easier to clean but still give the matt look you desire.

I have just finished filling holes and sanding my new stand and I have no idea
what to do next.

Do I stain, sand, stain, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint... If so
what is the best stain to use and what is the best paint to use.

I am looking for a nice glossy black finish.  Nothing too Glossy or too
fancy but still nice.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Black will require "paint" Good glossy oil based paint will do it with one product. You will not need to sand it between coats if your base sanding is good. For a glass look it would need to be lacquered with a black optitoner and finished with a "Good" quality lacquer. Several coats total with lots of sanding.

Is there a brand that is preferred for use on tanks? Can I get it a home depot or lowes?

Can I brush the paint since I don't have a spray gun?

Sorry for all the questions. I am just real excited and want this stand to look nice.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Any good quality oil based will work fine. It will not look like a sprayed black lacquer but will be nice non the less.

Do I need to stain it first?

What stain is best?

for waterproofing?

I have no idea. I read a thread on some other site and the guy stained his stand and then painted it.

Should I use a primer before the paint?

No reason to stain. You can prime it for sure. I would personally prime it with Kilz. Sand well with 180/220 grit sand paper before paint.
