Some of you might know I am replacing my 125 ish with a 180g tank. In doing this, I needed to pull my old fish out while transferring tanks. I put them (eels and grouper) in a 46g rubbermaid bucket. I went and bought the cheapest heater cause I only needed it for a few days. I put the heater in the water and turned it up till the light came on (signaling it was heating). Then I slowly turned the heat down till the light went off... Well, stupid cheap heater...later the heater turned on and NEVER turned off... I lost my eels and grouper.

That's why I never use heaters. Evil little devices that they are.

I feel your pain, when I was fairly new in the hobby and upgraded to my 120g, I did the same thing. I put all my livestock(previously owned and that i got with the purchase of the tank) in a 20g tank, used a cheap heater for the night. I even put a temp gauge so I could easily check the temp. I wasnt able to set my tank up as quickly as I had hoped so I left the livestock in the little tank, everything looked fine so I went to bed. When I woke up in the morning, and all I saw was floating fish. The temp gauge said 110 deg and everything was boiled. Well I guess not everything, one of my clowns somehow survived. I still have her today. She is the hartiest fish I have ever owned. Sorry to hear about your loss.

Ouch! I hate heaters, but sometimes they're a necessary evil.

That is so sad. It happens WAY more than it should. I often debat the risk of too warm vs too cold when using a heater in a small tank.
The other day I had a similar issue. I had a small 50W heater in 4-5g of water (in a styro), but the water warmed tp 79 deg instead of the 73 deg I wanted.
I tried a new heater temp control method. I have one of the 15min increment fully adjustable timers ( this one) that I set to a loop of: on for 15min and off for 30min. I figured that if the heater did run hot or too long the timer would help keep the temp in check.
I put the heater on the timer and the temp stayed ~73 deg.
Not sure how it would work in other situations, but that's what happended for me.
