I've been looking into getting a lemonpeel angel fish for my 30 gallon soft coral reef aquarium. I understand that dwarf angels have a tendancy to nip at soft corals, lps, clam mantles, zoas, etc. but they are so gorgeous I'm really wanting to give it a go. Has anyone had any experience with them. What do you suggest? Lastly, do you think it would work to "test" this angel out by placing a frag of lps and or Zoa in the tank with it at the LFS for a couple days to see if it is a nipper? Any thoughts would be appreciated. The tank has been set up and running for about 5 years, 2 of which have been as a softy reef.
Many of us keep Coral Beauties or Flame Angels. Pretty much any dwarf angel fish will have a tendency to nip corals. I personally have a Coral Beauty (for MANY years) and he hasn't bothered my corals or clams.
As for testing at the pet store, my feeling is it wouldn't be effective. Feeding styles and grazing (live rock) would be different.
There is always a risk when it comes to angels. The best thing I have found is to keep it in a frag tank if you have one of those available. That is what I am doing to "sample" my regal angel right now. Otherwise keeping it well fed can help...its hit or miss.
Make sure you post your best pictures every month in our POTM forum.
i had a lemonpeel for awhile and he never touched my coral. i currently have a pygmy angel in my SPS tank with 2 clams and he does not bother anything.
Thanks everyone. I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a go, I can always remove it if it gives me any problems. Just another reason to plop myself down in front of the tank and watch for a few hours.
